*Exactly* what I want from a cozy romantasy. I cried tenderly over the casual reveal of emotional truths more times than I care to count. This is a treasure of a found family story. 👇🏻

monalyisha 1/4: While I‘ve read better written sex scenes, they weren‘t completely lacking in spice. I also wish there‘d been slightly more attention paid to developing Sera & Francesca‘s friendship. 2d
monalyisha 2/4: And the mystery about how to adapt and personalize the spell to restore Sera‘s powers wasn‘t particularly mysterious; I guessed two out of the three ingredients pretty quickly (and the third — or the second, technically — couldn‘t have been guessed until the requisite context was provided). (edited) 2d
monalyisha 3/4: Still, Mandanna‘s writing shines so brightly in most places, and so many of the storylines wrap up in such a satisfying way, that I‘m inclined to overlook any minor quibbles I may have. A sweet and charming story, which manages to address culturally relevant subjects (e.g. pronoun usage, autism) in a completely organic way. 2d
monalyisha 4/4: Of the two novels I‘ve read by Mandanna, I prefer The Secret Society…but I think it‘s because I‘m a coastal girly. No shade to this follow-up whatsoever! I read it quickly and greedily, and I have no regrets. 2d
BookmarkTavern I can‘t wait to see what Mandanna does next! ❤️ 2d

For some reason, this book took me longer to finish than her first book; maybe because it was my night time book. I decided to finish it up on my #audiowalk and ended up enjoying it. For me, the author really stuck the ending. It was perfect for the characters. Roo Roo, the undead rooster, is my favorite character. Murder and Mamon is my new night time book. I haven‘t picked a new one for my walks yet.

Though not strictly connected to the Secret Society of Irregular Witches, written also by Mandanna, this definitely left me with the same feelings. They're both lovely reads, where the magic, while central to the story, really isn't the most important part of the story. These books just made me feel good about having read them. #43-2025

A once powerful witch who lost her magic after bringing her aunt back to life discovers there may be a way to get her powers back--but it will take the help of the cold historian staying at her family's inn to translate the spell she needs. This was such a sweet, cozy fantasy romance. I could read a hundred of these if Sangu Mandanna continues to write them!

Audiobook knitting. Having traveled by boat, plane, and car the last few weeks, I've gotta say train is by far my favorite way to travel. I wish there was more infrastructure to support it throughout the States!

IriDas Agree. I‘m taking the train tomorrow. It‘s a pleasant way to travel. 3w
Ruthiella I 100% agree. I wish passenger trains in the US were more widespread. 3w
Amiable I love train travel! I used to commute to work on one, and every time we visit our youngest son in Baltimore we take Amtrak instead of flying. A few years ago we went to Belgium and the Netherlands and traveled exclusively by train. I too wish the U.S. had a better rail infrastructure more like Europe. 3w

This was just the sticky-sweet I was looking for from Mandanna, and I had such a good time UNTIL the very end (spoilers in the comments). The strength from this one, and the first Mandanna witchy romance I‘ve read, are the side characters that fill out the story behind the romance. It‘s so colorful and cozy and the settings are so lovely. Good time, and a perfect cold-weather read.

?? stars (I‘m sitting on this one a minute | #romance

MsRadioSilence I really, really hate when specifically femme characters are forced to give up their magic/memories/skills/etc in order to defeat the big bad. We spent the whole book getting Sera‘s magic back, and while I love that she has her family, and having family is better than magic, but why can‘t she have both?? Why must Sera, who‘s been racially aggressed and put down this whole book, and fought to get her magic back, have to give it up to defeat ALBERT? 3w
BookmarkTavern Oh you make an excellent point! I hadn‘t even considered that! 3w
MsRadioSilence @BookmarkTavern it‘s only been in a couple books I‘ve read this year but it drives me NUTS 😭😭 3w
Scochrane26 I was disappointed about that, too 3w

This is a sweet, cozy fantasy with some romance. It has some very cute characters, and in the same world as the authors first book, but is a standalone novel. This story is a little melancholy however, and the ending is actually a bit sad. So a well written story, but not quite the tone I was looking for. 3.5⭐️

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Impeccable vibes, lots of heart, endearing and eccentric characters, and a great sense of home. This is the kind of comfort read I can imagine picking up again sometime, when in need of a magical, bookish hug. #Aardvark #AardvarkBookClub

When Sera casts a spell to resurrect the only family member she has, she spends all her magic. For 15 years, she stays @ her inn until her nephew comes crashing through w/ an idea to restore her magic.

This was so lovely! The found family, the familial relationship w/ Sera & her aunt. The magic! & the ending actually surprised me multiple times! & the romance was just enough for me. I can see this becoming a comfort read for sure.🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗

Sera is the most powerful witch in ages, but loses much of her magic after doing a spell she didn‘t know was restricted. Thus starts this story that is largely charming. I do wish the focus was more fully on the magic bits and less on the love interest, but that‘s just my preference.

So mad at myself for not cracking this open the day it arrived from Aardvark. I loved this so much. It‘s just as wonderful as The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches - lovely, cozy writing, lovable characters, including a zombie rooster named Roo Roo, and a story that draws you in and blocks out the real world. It‘s a warm book hug, with subtle socio-political commentary, if you pay attention.

monalyisha Yes! Sera‘s speech at the end about how restructuring power is necessary, even/especially after the kingpin has been knocked down, felt very (needfully) pointed. 2d

This whimsical, warm-hearted, wonder-filled fantasy is full of found family, grumpy x grumpy romance, old spell books, the magic of home—and one conniving fox! Sangu Mandanna is a sorceress of cozy, steamy romantasy with heart and I will happily follow her to the warm hearth and unexpected lemon tea showers of Batty Hole Inn—and beyond!

CatLass007 I really enjoy this author and I‘ve had this book on my wish list ever since I heard about it. Thanks for the review and recommendation! 3mo

Pub Day: 17th July 2025

It's been some time since I read a book that pulled me into the story so much that I forgot I was reading about fictional characters. Yes, sure, it's unlikely I'll meet a speaking fox in my life and there might not be real magic out there, but all the characters felt very real. Believable backstories, believable problems and struggles.

I want to visit Batty Hole Inn and hug all of them.

I loved the very secret society of irregular witches SO so much I feel like I can safely ‘recommend‘ the author‘s second book even though it doesn‘t come out until next year. I just know this is going to be a gorgeously cosy summery witchy novel
