5/5 for this one! This was such a good book! I immediately loved bad boy Slate and sweet innocent Cadence! The story of banished magic was great! It pulled me in and had me wanting to know more! The romance was awesome as was all the action! This fantasy YA was so good. I cannot wait to read the next one.

I suppose, after reading the blurb, I was expecting more magic, and it was a story more about short battles with different spirits/demons to obtain the objects needed to unlock the magic. Written in a "Gone Girl" alternating voice style, we do get a view point from the two main protagonists, Slate and Cadence, which lets you get to know each more indepthly. However the romance between the two is uncomfortable as she is ... continued in comments .

Neverending_booklist ...only 17 yet appears to have the emotional age of twelve (asking to sleep in her fathers bed after fighting one of the demon/spirits, for example?). Hopefully she matures a bit before the next installment - I do want to know what happens when magic is restored after all.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is an advanced copy from NetGalley.
I am totally in love with this book. The story is seriously engaging. If not because I need to go to work and sleep, I would have finished in 2 days. It was that good. Love the way the story comes together.

Holy magical relic hunting this book was good! I tore through it with wild abandon and loved every second of it. I enjoyed this read with its delightfully quaint, small town witchy lore to its well crafted characters that were decidedly gray. I even fell for the insta-love that was one brash leg of a short lived love triangle. The writing was gritty and authentic feeling, the world building was solid. I definitely recommend giving this a go.
