'Haunting and atmospheric, The Hiding Place lingers in the dark spaces of a home' A.J. Gnuse, author of Girl in the Walls 'The perfect modern ghost story' Katie Lowe, author of The Furies 'The Hiding Place has everything' Jess Kidd author of Things in Jars Some secrets can never be concealed . . . Nell Galilee, her husband and twelve year old step-daughter Maude rent a holiday cottage by the sea, needing time and space away from home. Nell grew up in this small, wind-blown town and has mixed feelings about returning, and it isn't long before she is recognised by a neighbour, seemingly desperate to befriend her. The cottage has been empty for some time, and from the start Nell feels uncomfortable there. Something isn't quite right about this place . . . Maude, furious about being brought here against her will, soon finds herself beguiled by the house's strange atmosphere. There are peculiar marks in the roof beams above her bedroom, and in another room, a hiding place, concealing a strange, unnerving object. As the house gradually reveals its secrets, Nell becomes increasingly uneasy - and Maude spellbound. But these women - and the women that surround them - are harbouring their own secrets too, and soon events will come to a terrible head . . . A brilliant, unsettling and chilling novel of mothers and daughters, truth and deception and the lengths people will go to, to obtain power over their own lives, The Hiding Place is the second chilling novel from the acclaimed author of The Wayward Girls. Everyone is talking about The Hiding Place... 'Satisfyingly unsettling, this is a hugely atmospheric novel that oozes with uncanny menace' Lucie McKnight Hardy 'Tense, atmospheric and suffused with the peculiar longing of motherhood' Araminta Hall 'Full of intrigue . . . sure to leave readers unsettled' Anita Frank, author of The Lost Ones

Nell, Chris and Maude are a blended family, Maude is his daughter and she and Nell since her parents break up just don't get on.
To try to mend bridges they rent little holiday let cottage right near the sea.
But things over time gradually get worse and worse not better.
The cottage is old and has a lot of history, there are strange carvings in the wooden beams, things hidden behind wall panels and disturbing things.
The house is strange...

I enjoyed this so much, dark, brooding and downright spooky for this time of year, such a perfect read.
Nell and her husband along with his daughter Maude all go for a break to a holiday cottage let near the sea.
But from the very first Nell is unsettled by the seemingly idyllic looking cottage.
There are weird carving up in the attics ceiling, strange things hidden within its walls.
The house changes and affects them all in different ways.

Told from the pov of several different female characters, this was an enthralling read. It starts off slow & takes a while to get going, but once it does it builds until the reader is drawn into the mystery of what's happening. Is the cottage haunted or is it down to human interaction? I enjoyed reading it & it was suitably spooky for October. 4🌟
