A man arrives at a house on the coast to write a book. Separated from his lover and family and friends, he finds the solitude he craves in the pyrotechnic beauty of nature, just as the world he has shut out is experiencing a cataclysmic shift. The preoccupations that have galvanised him and his work fall away and he becomes lost in memory and beauty. He begins to tell us a story ... A retired porn star who is made an offer he can't refuse for the sake of his family and future. So he returns to the world he fled years before, all too aware of the danger of opening the door to past temptations and long-buried desires. Can he resist the oblivion and bliss they promise? A breathtakingly audacious novel by the acclaimed author of The Slap and Damascus about finding joy and beauty in a raging and punitive world, about the refractions of memory and time and, most subversive of all, the mystery of art and its creation.

I‘ve just finished this and I don‘t know how to review it. At times I thought a pick, then a so so and almost a bail.
It‘s certainly different. I fast read the last third. Something caught my attention and I slowed down towards the end and wondered does he have second sight. There is beauty in his writing . A very different and sometimes difficult read for me.

CarolynM This is next month's book group read for me. I'm looking forward to it. 3y
Jeg @CarolynM I‘m sure there will be a lot of discussion. Very interested to see what you think. 3y

Pickpick

Tsiolkas is an important Australian writer & he influenced me to make a start on reading Patrick White‘s considerable body of work, but I sometimes find him a bit whiny & pretentious. This autofiction is his latest offering; about a solitary writing retreat. We hear how his fictional characters are formed by real people in his past & present life. There‘s a lot of dick & balls & stinky armpits (😬) & a lot of writing about the beauty of Australia.

CarolynM Great review. I gave in to impulse and bought myself a copy of this when I was Christmas shopping last week. I could do without the "smelly armpits" (as you say) aspect of his writing (I really disliked Loaded) but I want to see what he's done with this one. I'm not up to anything th as tvrequires thought right now, but hopefully in the New Year... 3y
MrsMalaprop @CarolynM Yeah, don‘t think this would be the book to read if you‘re looking for something light or to quickly engage you. I will be most interested to read your review when you do get to it. xx 3y

This book seems to be a mix of memoir & fiction; a writer talking about the writing process ✍️. Interesting 🤔. #currentlyreading

Bumped this up my list because a good friend just finished it and pleaded with me to read it so we can talk about it.
Took this, as it turns out, prescient photo yesterday. Now that I am 50 pages in I am struck by the unintended (and yet appropriate) phallic imagery of my veggies and hummus snack 🍆😬🤭. #currentlyreading #lifeimitatingart #ozfiction

kspenmoll Now that you mention it…😂😂 3y
CarolynM 🤣 I think I want to read this, but I'm still deciding. Look forward to seeing what you think. 3y

Mehso-so

I‘m quite skeptical of writers writing about writers, and I must say this hasn‘t done much to change my mind. I wanted to be generous in my reading, and Tsiolkas is undeniably a talented writer, but 7 1/2 at its heart is one long lament about The Modern World. It‘s more masterfully written than a forwarded chain email that‘s been scanned by Norton Anti-Virus, but the vibe is the same. Full review: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/new-releases/

MrsMalaprop Interesting review 🤔. I have bumped this up my list because a good friend told me she needs to talk about it. 3y

I loved this. A man goes to a house on the coast to write a novel. He rejects the trend of writing about big issues & wants to write about (escape to?) the idea of beauty. What follows is a masterful blend of memoir & fiction as we see the author at work & the birth of a story. Wonderful, strong prose, honest & original, it made me think about what a novel can do & look afresh at nature. Exquisite blend of memory & fiction, resisting ‘safe Art‘.

CarolynM I've been trying to decide whether I want to read this. Your review is making me think I do. 3y
