3 posts | 7 read | 7 to read
The Secret Garden with a twist: in this follow-up to Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy, this full-color graphic novel moves Mary Lennox to a New York City brownstone, where she and her very first group of friends restore an abandoned rooftop garden...and her uncle's heart. Mary Lennox is a loner living in Silicon Valley. With her parents always working, video game and tech become her main source of entertainment and "friends." When her parents pass away in a tragic accident, she moves to New York City to live with her uncle who she barely knows, and to her surprise, keeps a gadget free home. Looking for comfort in this strange, new reality, Mary discovers an abandoned rooftop garden and an even bigger secret...her cousin who suffers from anxiety. With the help of her new friends, Colin and Dickon, Mary works to restore the garden to its former glory while also learning to grieve, build real friendships, and grow. This title will be simultaneously available in paperback.

Ok, maybe we didn‘t need a retelling of Secret Garden, but the updated characters are so well done and giving Colin an anxiety disorder was brilliant. I think this is a really good way to get kids to think about invisible illness and encourage empathy. And Dickon shrugging and saying everybody‘s weird so what‘s the big deal was perfect. I really enjoyed it, and so did kiddo (who recommended it to me).

IamIamIam 😲 I think I might absolutely need this!!!! The Secret Garden is my top comfort read & a childhood favorite!!! 🥰 2y
ravenlee @IamIamIam I was surprised how much I liked it. Mary isn‘t quite as insufferable as in the original, but she‘s just obnoxious enough at the beginning to work. I really enjoyed noticing the little things - Robin is a cat, who lives in a bodega with Ben, who‘s an indoor gardener, and Robin helps Mary find the key…it was very well done, in my opinion. I hope you enjoy it! 2y

This was the book I didn‘t think I needed. The Secret Garden was lovely. Why the need for a remake? Well, let me tell you. THIS is why. The garden in this case is an urban garden. Anxiety, panic disorder, and the different types of dealing with death are dealt with in such a nuanced and thoughtful way. Counseling is shown as a positive. The illustrations take the story to the next level. I can‘t wait to recommend this book to young patrons.

EJG31 Her other graphic novel, Anne of West Philly, is also really good. 3y
Nebklvr @EJG31 Will need to check it out. Thanks!! 3y

The plot and emotions of this book saved it from a so-so. I didn‘t really enjoy the art style and all the women had the same body type. Also, how is a small child going to the Met and the Natural History Museum without any money? New York isn‘t cheap, and yet Mary‘s seeing Monet paintings without spending any money. Overall, 4⭐️
