Where Tomorrows Aren't Promised
Where Tomorrows Aren't Promised: A Memoir of Survival and Hope | Carmelo Anthony
3 posts | 2 read
From iconic NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony comes a New York Times bestselling memoir about growing up in the housing projects of Red Hook and Baltimorea brutal world Where Tomorrows Arent Promised. For a long time, Carmelo Anthonys world wasnt any larger than the view of the hoopers and hustlers he watched from the side window of his familys first-floor project apartment in Red Hook, Brooklyn. He couldnt dream any bigger than emulating his older brothers and cousin, much less going on to become a basketball champion on the world stage. He faced palpable dangers growing up in the housing projects of Red Hook and West Baltimores Murphy Homes (a.k.a. Murder Homes, subject of HBOs The Wire). He navigated an education system that ignored, exploited, or ostracized him. He suffered the untimely deaths of his closely held loved ones. He struggled to survive physically and emotionally. But with the strength of family and the guidance of key mentors on the streets and on the court, he pushed past lethal odds to endure and thrive. By the time Carmelo found himself at the NBA Draft at Madison Square Garden in 2003 preparing to embark on his legendary career, he wondered: How did a kid whod had so many hopes, dreams, and expectations beaten out of him by a world of violence, poverty, and racism make it here at all? Carmelos story is one of strength and determination; of dribbling past players bigger and tougher than him, while also weaving around vial caps and needles strewn across the court; where dealers and junkies lined one side of the asphalt and kids playing jacks and Double Dutch lined the other; where rims had no nets, and you better not call a foula place Where Tomorrows Arent Promised.

hello again,

The book I was reading, and finished after a year and a half, was: Where Tomorrows Aren‘t Promised by Carmelo Anthony. Previously, I had talked about how his past struggles had defined who he was and how he operates as a human. That is not the case for the last several chapters of the novel.

Yes, his struggles continue on throughout the pages, but these last few chapters were more focused on…

talon.kopp …his basketball performance(s) and school life. It describes his thought process of choosing a college to attend (Syracuse), and how the boarding school he was forced to attend seemed horrid but was alright at times. He provides statistics, names of accomplishments/awards he won, and more of the people he unfortunately lost. The books ends on draft night in 2002, where he gets selected 3rd overall by the Denver Nuggets… 13mo
talon.kopp …If you enjoy books that include overcoming obstacles and pushing through adversity, you will enjoy this memoir.

The point of view of this book is first person as Anthony uses “I”, “me”, and “we” while describing his life throughout - The narrator is the main character.

p.s. spine of the book got wet and soggy, so now it‘s ripped a little and stained.

This memoir has been one to remember for me. As I do not do much reading in my own time, this book provided me with both enjoyment and a better understanding of life in New York and Baltimore, as well as the life of Carmelo Anthony.

Carmelo Anthony describes his challenging come-up without a father, family members having run-ins with policemen and death, witnessing drug abuse and the effects of it on people, and finally, how basketball was his…

talon.kopp escape. I am not finished the book yet, just over halfway through it, but I can already tell that the rest of this book is going to be enjoyed thoroughly.

If you like books about celebrity‘s lives before success or about basketball players, I would recommend this one.

talon.kopp The theme present in this book is that of perseverance. Carmelo has gone through so many hardships, disappointments, and tragedies that his ability to get through everything and still come out on top is something no one can take away from him. From living in a broke neighbourhood with a severe reason for depression to now being on of the most influential NBA players of all time is commendable. 1y
MissYaremcio Wonderfully done Talon! Sounds like an excellent autobiography! 6/6 1y

This was surprising. Only covers Melo's childhood and teen years but it was amazingly compelling. He has been through...a LOT. Highly recommend to anyone who likes basketball and great stories.
