Who Lost Russia?
Who Lost Russia?: How the World Entered a New Cold War | Peter Conradi
3 posts | 1 read
The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 was hailed as the beginning of a new era of peace and co-operation between East and West. But in the years since, Russia has made incursions into Georgia, Ukraine and Syria, leaving the Western powers at a loss. What went wrong? Drawing on exclusive interviews with key players, Peter Conradi examines the pivotal moments of the past quarter of a century and outlines how we might get relations back on track before it’s too late. Who Lost Russia? provides the essential background to understanding the bizarre and shifting relationship between Trump’s America and Putin’s Russia. This updated edition includes a new chapter on the year following the 2016 US presidential election.

This is a whirlwind tour of the last thirty years of U.S.-Russian relations. It's not breaking any new ground but if you have felt the sudden need to remind yourself of what's happened since the end of the Soviet Union (can't imagine why) it's useful and will get you up to speed fast.

Boris Yeltsin: “In August 1994, during a visit to Berlin, at a lunch event he had jumped onto the stage and started to conduct the military band. The following month, on an official visit to Ireland, he was deemed too ‘unwell‘ to get off his plane at Shannon airport, leaving Albert Reynolds, the Irish premier, to wait in vain at the end of the red carpet.“

Sophronisba “On another occasion, during a trip to Washington, Clinton was later to reveal, Yeltsin was discovered by the Secret Service standing drunkenly in his underpants outside the White House trying to hail a cab to go and buy a pizza.“ 2y

Awfully prescient, from four years ago: “While commentators in America and Europe rail against Putin‘s aggression, opinion polls in Russia show that fascination with the West and all things Western has been replaced with a level of hostility not seen even at the height of Soviet rule. The world is in danger of sliding into a new Cold War.“
