He hopes that Mary will put her support in writing - and condemn herself to a traitor's death. A queen in mortal danger . . . Bruno is tasked with going undercover to join the conspirators. Can he stop them before he is exposed? Either way a queen will die; Bruno must make sure it is the right one.

Bruno is assigned by Walsingham to infiltrate the Babington plot to kill Elizabeth and put Mary on the throne.

It's been a while since I read the previous one in the main series (2016!) so I struggled a bit w/ all the back references in the 1st 1/3 or so. The story had some exciting moments but also some where I thought the author was trying too hard to find contemporary resonances - to the point where I was thinking Bruno couldn't have said that

The latest in the Giordano Bruno mystery series. Bruno has returned to England and has been tasked by Walsingham to infiltrate the latest group of conspirators who want to put Mary, Queen of Scots on the throne. Impersonating a Spanish prince, Bruno is also seeking the apparent murderer of Robert Poole‘s sister.

As always, Parris gives us great depth of historical detail. I love this series.

Considering that I haven‘t read the previous books in this series, I thought this one worked excellently as a stand alone. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It‘s beautifully written and well researched with a good sense of time and place. Such a gripping, entertaining and fun thriller. If you enjoy historical fiction combined with a bit of fact, you‘ll love this one. #Pigeonhole

Lucy_Anywhere I enjoyed the first book in this series 😀 4y
