Almost a pick. A Halloween read. Three acquaintances (a criminal, a crime writer and an ex-cop) go to an exclusive place to eat that is impossible to get to, or escape from.

A dark macabre tale (that is truly gruesome) but lightened with comedy. The characters are stock but the twists and the plot picking pace makes this matter less.

The book isn't a novelisation of the 2025 movie, but it was released at around the time it was in production, so I've borrowed a film poster image ?

“Moscow, Idaho, is a nook in the northern forests, a college town most of the year and a working-class whistle-stop for the rest of it.”

#FirstLineFridays @ShyBookOwl

SamAnne It is more than a working class whistle stop….in defense of Moscow ID. Besides the crazy church trying to buy up commercial property, it is a cute college town. So sorry these horrific murders happened there. 5d
Elizabeth2 @SamAnne I‘m not very far into this book but I‘m seeing some problems with it. The way the author is describing some people and events is not sitting well with me. I can‘t quite put my finger on it yet, but an unfair assessment of the town of Moscow fits right in there with that feeling I‘m getting. 5d
SamAnne @Elizabeth2 I live 70 miles north and was/still am so inundated with the news on this murder it‘s not a book I have interest in picking up. But that line told me the writer probably wasn‘t from the area! Moscow has one of the best food co-ops around for example—I always stop before I head back to Spokane! But hope the book gets better…. (edited) 5d
SamAnne @elizabeth2 I was pretty obsessed with the murders early on…pretty shocking for that town. 5d

It is Mary and Elizabeth, two women, very poor, very tired, working out in the fields.
