Mrs. Wood is a very well known medium in Victorian London who is hiding a secret about her past. Attempting to attract new patrons, she takes on a young student, Emmie Finch, who has her own agenda and, blackmailing her instructor, threatens Mrs. Woods livelihood.

The details about readings, séances and the tricks of the trade are fascinating. Lucy Barker gives us a portrait of a woman potentially aging out of her profession. Well worth reading.

The atmosphere of this novel, with its Victorian parlours complete with buffet tables laden with blancmange & walls bursting with taxidermy was fun! The characters were memorble & they gave a window into the spiritualism scene in early Victorian London. Especially liked seeing a ‘mature‘ female leading character. How a séance would have been conducted and how mediums create the atmosphere for these was fascinating. A fun read. Not too taxing!

Love a book and bookmark set!

This is a beautifully written and atmospheric story which I read via the #Pigeonhole app. There is a modicum of humour and it touches on women‘s suffrage. The descriptions of London are very vivid and the characters realistic and well drawn. There is even some intrigue and suspense. A compelling, entertaining, witty and interesting read which I can very much recommend. Illusion is everything, my friend.
