The Woman with the Cure | Lynn Cullen
2 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
She gave up everything and changed the world. A riveting novel based on the true story of the woman who stopped a pandemic, from the bestselling author of Mrs. Poe. In 1940s and 50s America, polio is as dreaded as the atomic bomb. No ones life is untouched by this disease that kills or paralyzes its victims, particularly children. Outbreaks of the virus across the country regularly put American cities in lockdown. Some of the worlds best minds are engaged in the race to find a vaccine. The man who succeeds will be a god. But Dorothy Horstmann is not focused on beating her colleagues to the vaccine. She just wants the world to have a cure. Applying the same determination that lifted her from a humble background as the daughter of immigrants, to becoming a doctor often the only woman in the room--she hunts down the monster where it lurks: in the blood. This discovery of hers, and an error by a competitor, catapults her closest colleague to a lead in the race. When his chance to win comes on a worldwide scale, she is asked to sink or validate his vaccineand to decide what is forgivable, and how much should be sacrificed, in pursuit of the cure.

Pickpick

I LOVE Lynn Cullen! Her historical fiction is top notch and always does that wonderful thing of truly great hisfic: it makes me crave to learn more about the topics/people being discussed and sends me down so many google rabbit holes. I had never heard of Dr. Horstmann before but she was amazing! I was born in the late 70s so I don‘t have any memory of polio being a huge problem but I couldn‘t help but relate it to what we‘ve all gone through ⬇️

candc320 Cont‘d: in the last few years and how terrifying it was waiting for a Covid vaccine. I will say I wish more people acted like the people in the 50s and respected each other and did their parts to try and keep everyone safe and healthy. The only thing keeping this from being a 5🌟 for me is that it was just a little too long and could have been edited down a bit. But still loved it! 🌟🌟🌟🌟💫 2y
TheBookHippie I remember getting polio vaccine on a sugar cube at ____gasp_____school. We just lined up and everyone did it… same for smallpox vaccine everyone just did it, you know for the common good. Oy. 2y
candc320 @TheBookHippie yes! They talked about that in the book (towards the end). 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures And such a great cover! 2y

I took a drive to my closest Barnes and Noble (about 30ish minutes away from me depending on Tampa traffic 🤦🏼‍♀️) specifically for The Woman With the Cure (I LOVE Lynn Cullen‘s writing) and came home with two more 🤣! I‘ve had my eyes on The Snow Hare for a while and couldn‘t not pick up Thread Needle after seeing that cover. Thread Needle isn‘t my typical kind of story so hopefully I like it!

brittanyreads Gotta love that temperamental Tampa traffic 🙄 haha nice haul! I've got my eye on Threadneedle! 2y
candc320 Oh it‘s just the best @BrittanyReads 🤣🤣!! The worst part is I‘m in north Tampa Bay so there are no bookstores closer to me….I‘m in like a dead zone for bookstores 😣 2y
brittanyreads Ugh! Tampa needs more bookstores! Especially independent ones! 2y

candc320 @BrittanyReads yes!! They used to have the cutest one called Inkwood Books but it sold, moved, and I think eventually closed down ☹️. I can‘t think of another one anywhere near me. 2y
brittanyreads Yes! I loved that one! I really only know of Oxford Exchange and Mojo Books (used bookstore) but otherwise you have to travel to St Pete. 2y
candc320 Oh I forgot about Oxford Exchange I love that one! It‘s about an hour away from me but I need to make time to go back! 2y
