When Oliver (Olly) Appleton's grandfather is killed in a suspicious accident, his family decides to move to Littleton, Massachusetts to take care of the family estate. Once there, they discover that they need to protect their land from a greedy mall developer, Hank Dalton. Sitting atop Oak Hill, the estate is surrounded by a wooded sanctuary known for unusual activities and superstitions involving mythical creatures - stories of which have been passed down since the Nipmuc people roamed the land.Olly's grandfather, a Harvard professor and Littleton eccentric, had been ridiculed and became an outcast for believing in these creatures. When Olly and his new friend, Ember, run into trouble with some local school bullies, the creatures step in to protect them, welcoming Olly and Ember into their community and proving the superstitions are quite true. The family of Spores, as they call themselves, build a friendship with Olly and Ember and discover a common goal. They all need to work together quickly to find a way to protect Oak Hill from Hank Dalton or lose their homes forever.
