3 posts | 3 read
Mix two parts The Great British Bake Off with one-part magical boarding school plus a generous dash of romance and youve got Basil and Oregano, a sweetly delicious lower young adult graphic novel. Porta Bella Magiculinary Academy is the finest school for the art of cooking with magic, and Basil Eyres is determined to be the top student. On the first day of her senior year, Arabella Oregano, the daughter of a renowned chef, joins the academy for her senior year as well. The two are instantly smitten with each other, but Basil senses theres something Arabella is hiding from her. Still, the two work together to stand out from the class as the end of year culinary festival approaches. But when Arabellas secret is reveled, Basil is faced with the hardest decision of her life, which has the potential to throw her future aspirations in jeopardy.

Mehso-so

While cleaning out my “to read” list here, I decided to download any graphic novels that were available from my library. This was the first one I read because it was the one I was most excited about - but it fell a little flat. The storyline moved a little too quickly - long standing resentments resolved in a frame or two - but the characters were great. I wanted more!

This was a cute graphic novel, though the plot was a little confused/rushed and perhaps better suited to a longer format. (Or a series?)

I've been hitting the library graphic novel shelves hard this year, and as a result am 30 books ahead on my Goodreads challenge. I thought to myself “maybe I should revise my target up?“, then realised I'm reading Outlander books now so perhaps not :)
