A Country of Refuge
A Country of Refuge: An Anthology of Writing on Asylum Seekers | Lucy Popescu
10 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
A Country of Refuge is a poignant, thought-provoking and timely anthology of writing on asylum seekers from some of Britain and Ireland’s most influential voices. Compiled and edited by human rights activist and writer Lucy Popescu, this powerful collection of short fiction, memoir, poetry and essays explores what it really means to be a refugee: to flee from conflict, poverty and terror; to have to leave your home and family behind; and to undertake a perilous journey, only to arrive on less than welcoming shores. These writings are a testament to the strength of the human spirit. The contributors articulate simple truths about migration that will challenge the way we think about and act towards the dispossessed and those forced to seek a safe place to call home. ‘A powerful, and frequently harrowing, collection ... I read it with fascination’ – Penelope Lively ‘A beautiful insight into the painful individuality of the refugee’ – Jon Snow

A good anthology to expand understanding of being a refugee. One writing raises an interesting question about categories & perceptions of refugees, who does & does not fit, changing with the times. One security guard was infuriating to me, describing a Syrian woman & children as "economic migrants," even after telling him her horrific story.

The first entry in this anthology of writings by asylum seekers is gut wrenching. 😞

In a world of negativity, scaremongering and hatred, this book reminds us of the human cost of conflicts, both past and present. It challenges the language used by politicians and the media. And more importantly, it shows that we can make a difference.

A few words on the responsibilities of the media in the world of human rights, and the positive outcomes that can be achieved when they use their power for good. #WilliamBoyd #WithGreatPowerComesGreatResponsibility

Just started reading this anthology on asylum seekers. It aims to be a positive voice amongst all the hatred spewed out by the media. Very moving. And funded through Unbound, which produces books through readers pledges. #ACountryofRefuge #Unbound
