Revelations of Divine Love | Julian of Norwich

Hi all! I've been caught up in #NaNoWriMo this month so haven't been reading much. Thought I'd get back on the horse with a #NonFiction choice from one of my favourite historians- Janina Ramirez. This book is about the first known woman to write in the English language: Julian of Norwich.

annahenke Interested to hear what you think! 7y
KellyTurner @annahenke I watched the TV show on it recently so really looking forward to reading this. Will let you know! 😀 7y

Putting a bit shout out to A Fairy's Tale by FD Lee. It's an independently published book, so it doesn't come up on Litsy. A reviewer described it as a combination between 1984 and Grimm's Fairy Tales! It tells the story of Bea, a cabbage fairy who lives in the Aenathlin. Aenathlin is ruled by the General Administration or GenAm and runs on belief. But the belief is running out. Can a cabbage fairy save the day? Brilliant, funny and moving!

Due to NaNoWriMo I have been doing more writing than reading this month. It didn't stop me from picking up this book though! (I have been waiting a long time for its release!) This is everything you want from a Peter Grant book- fans will love it! If you haven't read any yet, the first book in the series is called River of London. I strongly recommend it!

Foxyfictionista I thought that it wasn't coming out until 2017! I must get it! 7y
TrishB Haven't read any of these yet, I take it you recommend them!? 7y
KellyTurner I definitely recommend them @TrishB, they are so good. Wizards meet crime fiction! It's out today in the U.K. @Foxyfictionista, not out in US till January next year. X 7y
TrishB @KellyTurner some more for the list! 7y

❤️ this book. It's a collection of Neil Gaiman's non- fiction, and is written as beautifully as his fiction is. If you want to drown in the sheer sublimity of words, if you love reading, writing, films and comics, this is the book for you.

I really enjoyed this book. I love the characters and the distinctiveness of their voices. But it left me with the feeling that not much has changed in the last 70 years. I wrote about it much more detail for the blog I jot things down for. If you fancy a read, here is the link. http://www.thebookeaters.co.uk/small-island-by-andrea-levy/

An incredible, moving book which was #RuinedByTheMovie. They managed to make it completely devoid of emotion, and Nicolas Cage's Italian accent was a disaster!

This was such a tough book to read, but so important. As a freed slave, Sethe is battling ghosts: the literal kind in the form of her dead daughter who haunts the home she lives in with her daughter Denver, and the metaphorical ones, in the form of her past. This book is about how horrific situations force people to make devastating decisions, and how the psychological impact of slavery has reverberated through the generations.

I've tried really hard with this book, promise. I loved Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies, but just couldn't get into this one. There are so many characters, and the constant jumping between them makes reading it quite complicated. I don't think it helps that I didnt have time to read it in big chunks. This isn't a book to dip in and out of: it demands your full attention.

The Hanging Tree | Ben Aaronovitch

So, in a moment of crazy excitement about a sneak preview of the first chapter being available on Ben Aaronovitch's website, I tweeted my desire to read it on the walk to work. Two typos later, both picked up and commented on by Mr Aaronovitch and I feel like a bit of an idiot. *sigh* 😳😳😳Of course, I blame autocorrect!! 😎

BookishMarginalia I'm sorry, what? He commented on the typos in your tweet?!? 8y
KellyTurner @BookishMarginalia Yeah- in a jokey way, and I joked back. But I still felt a bit silly! 8y

Harry August is born in the station toilets in Berwick upon Tweed in 1919. He takes his first breaths as his mother bleeds to death. Adopted by Patrick and Harriet August, he lives a fairly normal life and dies in his 70s. But Harry is born again: in the same bathroom, to the same woman in the same year and with the memories of his previous life. A brilliantly addictive tale of immortality, knowledge, consequence and the end of the world.

This is a retelling of Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale set in the modern day. Hedge fund manager, Leo is certain his wife MiMi is having an affair with his best friend Xeno and sets out to prove it with "disastrous consequences". The language is beautiful, the characters realistic. I read it in one day (haven't done that for a long time!) It's bordering on perfect! ❤️?

So this happened last week! My lucky husband got to meet the immensely talented Paul Cornell at Forbidden Planet in London! We both love his work- from the Dr Who episodes and novels, to the Shadow Police series- a must read if you like fantasy! This novella was pretty good too. A slightly spooky read about a quaint English village on the boundary between 2 worlds and the horrors on the other side.

In a world of negativity, scaremongering and hatred, this book reminds us of the human cost of conflicts, both past and present. It challenges the language used by politicians and the media. And more importantly, it shows that we can make a difference.

Reaper Man | Terry Pratchett

Death has been forced into retirement by the auditors of reality. Faced with his own mortality he sets off to spend his time. Meanwhile Windle Poons is having a going away party. As a wizard of the Unseen University he knows which day he will die (today) and after 130 years is rather looking forward to the prospect of being reborn. But with Death gone, Windle finds himself non- alive. Or un-dead. Classic Pratchett: funny, clever, profound.
