Readers will want to savor every word of Everlees splendid debut, the launch of her Lucky Lovers of London series, like a fine vintage wine. Booklist, on The Gentleman's Book of Vices Jess Everlee follows up her sparkling debut The Gentleman's Book of Vices with this charming queer historical romp, in which two lifelong best friends find romance as they join forces to save the one place where they can truly be themselves. London, 1885 David Forester and Noah Clarke have been best friends since boarding school. But when the unscrupulous baron who owns the Fox moves to close it, Davids world comes crashing down. Noahs never feared a little high-stakes gambling, but as he risks his own career in hopes of helping David, he realizes two things: One: David has not been honest about how he ended up at The Curious Fox in the first place. Two: Noahs feelings for David have become far more than friendly. What future lies beyond those first furtive kisses? Noah and David can hardly wait to find outif they can untangle David from his web of deception without losing everything Noah has worked for. Mehso-so

Jess Everlee‘s second book is a quieter story about two BFFs who finally admit they‘re in love, and I‘m sorry to say it never sparked for me. While I can appreciate how Everlee disrupts some of the expectations readers have for the friends-to-lovers trajectory, I felt like the plot kept destroying its own momentum and the emotional payoff was too understated to compensate for the lack of dramatic tension. I‘m disappointed. ⬇️

xicanti That said, the other NetGalley reviews are a 5-star gushfest about everything Everlee does with these characters and their story; further proof, if anyone needed it, that literature is a hell of a subjective medium and none of us reads the same book as all the rest. This was a 3-star read for me. You might love it to the core of your being. 2y
peanutnine Love your review. The first book in this series is at the top of my TBR 2y
xicanti @peanutnine the first one is so good! It sparkles. That made my response to this one all the more disappointing. 2y

Doing some outdoor reading with little miss Penny (who‘s mostly interested in napping, but whatevs). I‘m glad I had an ARC of Jess Everlee‘s second novel on hand; AN ISLAND PRINCESS STARTS A SCANDAL by Adriana Herrera left me with a terrible craving for queer historical romance, and I can satisfy it right away! I adored Everlee‘s first novel, THE GENTLEMEN‘S BOOK OF VICES, so I‘ve got high hopes for A RULEBOOK FOR RESTLESS ROGUES.
