The Golden Bough | James George Frazer
Pickpick

Finally finished this! 🙌🏻 I really enjoyed all the comparative mythology, all the different and similar myths and legends and magic from around the world… though it did get repetitive. Frazer‘s conclusions about the common threads and their meanings were a lot more suspect.

ravenlee I think, like a lot of that era‘s scholarship, it‘s useful and important to know what they discovered/researched, even if it‘s just as a starting point for what came after. Have you read any Joseph Campbell? I find his work to be just as well-collected and his conclusions to be a little more reasonable. 3y
Clare-Dragonfly @ravenlee I have! It‘s been years but I remember liking his works very much. 3y

Not really sure what to expect from this book but I understand it to be one of the very early, foundational pagan texts… which means I don‘t expect much truth or rigor. However, I see good Litsy posts, so maybe I‘ll be surprised!

ravenlee I thought it was very interesting, though it‘s definitely dated. There‘s a strong line of influence from Frazer to Joseph Campbell to modern mythologists, which I enjoy studying. 3y

Fascinating read so far. So much that I didn't appreciate before about folklore and mythology.

Hit the thrift store today, and I found some cool old copies of a few books. The Golden Bough is high on my list of intriguing books, so I can't wait to get into it. That's is, after I start running through my stack a bit.

Found these old abridged editions and couldn‘t choose, so I got both with the intention of giving one to a friend and letting her choose. One is from 1925 and the other from 1929. They are in great shape to be nearing a century old. 😍

readordierachel Wow! Those are lovely. 6y

#Recommendsday pick of the week. I just have an abridged version of volume one from 1958. The other version I had years ago was an abridgment of the whole cannon put out by Gramercy. Someday I will have Frazer's complete magnum opus along with his other oldie but goodie, The White Goddess.
