Grace is hiding in Paris under a fake name, scraping by restoring antiques. We gradually learn what has happened in her past and how she hasn‘t quite changed her tune. I enjoyed this, but it‘s definitely a slow burn.

This debut novel about a young girl escaping her crime filled past has mixed reviews re: characterization and lack of 'thriller' action (no thanks to overused Gone Girl comparisons). However, because I knew a girl exactly like Grace, the characters felt true. The story explores the dark side of identity and love. Not perfect, but constructed well enough to keep me going till the last page. 4/5

This book was totally not what I expected. It was sort of refreshing that it wasn't a relationship gone bad premise. So glad I finally got around to reading it!

This is true. It happened at my alma mater Transylvania University (yes I've heard the vampire jokes) a few years after I graduated.

I alternated between sympathizing with and being exasperated by Grace/Julie. But I was captivated by this story- moody, dark and more than a little desperate.

Grace is a young girl living behind many personas and running from her past. After her closest friends rob a historic home in Tennessee, she flees her hometown. Unbecoming shows how you can never truly be the person you used to be, and life will always catch up. A very nostalgic feeling novel!

This book made me uncomfortable and I can't put my finger on why. Motivations were mystifying to me and I just wanted to know what happened. Glimmers of the Goldfinch but with less characterization. If that's your jam, read it!

Why can't I get in to this book???
