Desert Jungle
Desert Jungle | Jeannie Baker
1 post | 1 read
Striking mixed-media art from the creator of Mirror lights up the Sonoran Desert, revealingthrough one wary boys experiencea habitat that is anything but barren and desolate. In a desert valley, surrounded by mountains of rock and cactus, is the tiny village the boy calls home. He never wanders far, frightened of coyotes and the dusty wilds beyond. On a visit to Grandpas ranch, he resists the invitation to explore an area where his grandfather grew up, far from any village. The boy would rather play it safe on his tablet. But one of the creatures he fears has other plans for him, and soon the vast desert jungle begins to share its secretswonders beyond imagining. Inspired by a research trip to the Sonoran Desert in Mexico, and illustrated with richly detailed and layered mixed-media collage, Jeannie Bakers gentle family story of awakening to nature is informed by the concept of nature deficit disorder, a subject she explores in the authors note. Her extensive afterword also illuminates the enormous biodiversity of one of the worlds most magnificentand misunderstoodhabitats.

Met 1 of my idols tonight at my library. The gentle, talented, all round good human above. I saw her on Gardening Oz once & have been collecting her 📚 since. If you aren‘t familiar with her work you have to see it to believe it. Tickets to her exhibition & talk were free & afterwards there was 🍾 & nibbles to finish a gorgeous week night off. No school tomorrow as I‘ve a couple of appointments & performing 🩰 at night. No rest for the wicked.

Jeg Great pic. I too love her work. We have most if not all of her books. (edited) 5h
