The Night Birds: A Novel | Christopher Golden

The next gripping, atmospheric horror novel from New York Times bestselling author Christopher Golden, set in a deteriorated, half-sunken freighter ship off the coast of Galveston, TX. Charlie Book and Ruby Cahill have history. After their love ended in heartbreak years ago, they never expected to see each other again. Now, as part of his work for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Book lives aboard the Christabel, a 19th century freighter half-sunken off the shore of Galveston. Over many years, a massive forest of mangrove trees has grown up through the deck of the ship, creating a startlingly beautiful enigma Book calls the Floating Forest. As a powerful storm churns through the Gulf, he intends to sleep on board as usual. But when he arrives at the dock, hes stunned to find Ruby there waiting for him. And shes not alone. With her are a mysterious woman and her infant child, asking Book to hide them safely aboard the Christabel while they're on the run. Only it isnt the police who are after them, its a coven of witches the woman, Mae, has fled, stealing away the helpless infant for whom the coven had hideous plans...or so Mae claims. Its lunacy and Book wants nothing to do with it. But after the way he and Ruby ended things, and the unspoken pain between them, he cant refuse. Yet even as he brings them out to the ruined ship and its floating forest, there are shadowed figures looming back in Galveston, waiting out the storm. And despite the worsening wind and rain, the night birds are flying, scouring the coastline for their prey.

Well, I see where the so-so consensus comes from lol. This was okay. I loved the Galveston setting, the storm, sunken ship growing mangrove trees. I enjoyed our intro to Ruby and the Christabel crew. Some creepy horror elements with the birds early on. But the witch storyline and lore was unbelievable with too many plot holes. The characters became ridiculous and the witches were weirdly inept. A 4-5⭐️ premise but lacking in execution. 2.5⭐️s

Playing catch-up on November‘s #ARichLife! The October #Harvest moon was a supermoon last month and looked similar to the Beaver supermoon of this week (pictured here over Texas skies). They were both so big and golden! 🌕🤩

The gold matches part of the cover of my current audiobook. This is different but fun so far! Set in the Galveston area during a severe storm, on a sunken ship with a mangrove forest, an infant being hidden and witches!

Reggie I read one of his and hated it. Should I give him another chance? (edited) 2mo

KT1432 Ahahaha I love the blunt honesty! 🤣 I‘m enjoying it so far, mainly because it‘s based in the Galveston area and I never really read books set there (somewhat near me), and I like the idea of the floating mangrove forest. I don‘t know about the plot though. I guess it involves witches lol and I‘m just not sure if it will make sense. I have a long flight in the morning and should get done with most of it. I‘ll report back! 🤣 @Reggie 2mo
KT1432 @Reggie yeah…it‘s not coming together for me friend lol 🥲 2mo

Although this was scary (and really bloody) once we meet all the characters and the witches, there‘s really much “there-here;” the plot is weak and fairly repetitive. All that said, I finished it, although it‘s not for the faint of heart. The Chistabel, a partially sunken 19th century freighter, consumed by a mangrove forest, is an interesting locus for the action. The baby, at perpetual danger of ritual sacrifice, is a horrifying plot device.

From the description and cover I thought this could go in a number of different directions, but I couldn‘t have guessed where it actually went! It was kind of a strange mix of romance/family drama and supernatural that I really didn‘t love. It wasn‘t bad it just wasn‘t what I particularly wanted out of the story. The narrator was good, though, and if you like sort of witchy/culty books give it a try! 🌟🌟🌟

I‘ve enjoyed Golden‘s books for years, but I only recently discovered he also writes shark thrillers under the name Chris Jameson, so that knowledge combined with the cover had me hoping for some sharky action in this unique setting of a submerged mangrove forest sprouting out of a shipwrecked behemoth. Instead, this one is witchier with some creepy moments & a plot centered around saving an infant. The romance elements fall flat but fun action!

Grateful to #netgalley for a copy of this audiobook. There were a lot of stunning visuals: a mangrove forest, a decaying ship, a potential infant sacrifice, a crown of candles. A lot of the suspense is based around: can they save the baby? I‘m not sure Golden made me feel that was ever in doubt
