Sanshiro
Sanshiro | Natsume Soseki
One of Soseki's most beloved works of fiction, the novel depicts the 23-year-old Sanshiro leaving the sleepy countryside for the first time in his life to experience the constantly moving 'real world' of Tokyo, its women and university. In the subtle tension between our appreciation of Soseki's lively humour and our awareness of Sanshiro's doomed innocence, the novel comes to life. Sanshiro is also penetrating social and cultural commentary.

Pickpick

4⭐️ Sanshiro began university life in Tokyo. All of sudden his life is filled with new things. The buzz of the metropolitan city, the inside of Tokyo scholars‘ lives, and of course, the ladies! How exciting!

Sanshiro is the first in a trilogy with thematically similar novels. The subsequents are Sorekara (And Then), and The Gate (which NYRB Classics edition I read recently)

I found Sanshiro ebook in my library‘s Libby app. After reading The Gate, I want to read more of Soseki‘s. Sanshiro is one of the two prequels to The Gate. I‘m loving it already 💖
