Pure Drivel | Steve Martin
7 posts | 16 read | 4 to read
'A mix of urbane wit and surreal extrapolations - Douglas Adams meets Flann O'Brien' IndependentWho else but Steve Martin could combine irrefutable evidence that Mars is populated by kittens with a treatise on sledgehammers? In this brilliantly witty collection of pieces Steve Martin takes a subversive glimpse at the world and a sideways swipe at the conventional. From memory tips for the over-fifties to his insightful exposition of 'Wittgenstein's Banana', never has 'pure drivel' been so entertaining.

This book had its highs and lows. There were times when I laughed out loud, and there were other times when I lost interest. I listened to the audio on Hoopla, and it was read by the author. If you love Steve Martin, you will probably enjoy this. If you are not a huge fan, you probably won't. The audio clocks in at just over two hours, so it is a quick listen.

LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA: WHY IT'S A BAD TITLE

I admit that "Love in the time of..." is a great title, up to a point. You're reading along, you're happy, it's about love...Then the morbid Cholera appears. I was happy till then. Why not Love in the Time of the Blue, Blue, Bluebirds? Love in the Time of Oozing Sores and Pustules is probably an earlier title...This writer, whoever he is, could have used a couple of weeks in Pacific Daylight Time.

Looking out over the East River from my jail cell and still running for public office, I realize that I have taken several actions in my life for which I owe public apologies.

Once, I won a supermarket sweepstakes even though my brother's cousin was a box boy in that very store. I would like to apologize to Safeway Food, Inc., and its employees. I would like to apologize to my family, who have stood by me, and especially to my wife Karen.

Spiderfelt I haven't read anything by Steve Martin, but I love his comedy. This looks like my style of wit. 8y

I listened to this one on audiobook. Listening to a book read by the author is always fun. That being said I thought this book was hilarious. A quick listen/read.
