Alice McDermott is one seriously skilled writer. Intimate details of daily life are rendered in such a wise and achingly beautiful way. We get a portrait of a close-knit Irish Catholic family in the late 50s/early 60s told in pieces through the eyes of the three children. I‘ve read and loved her more recent novels, The Ninth Hour and Someone. So glad I finally got around to reading this earlier work.
