Penitence: A Novel | Kristin Koval

Mehso-so

Family secrets abound wrapped in bitterness and poor decisions made out of fear over the course of decades. I appreciated the effort to show how these lies and unethical actions can come back to destroy you years later, but this felt too messy and left me wishing it had focused more on the reason behind Nora killing her brother and how the family had to cope with the possibility of losing two children. 3⭐️ s.

A slow moving mystery. Some of the characters were a bit quirky. Very not earth-shattering story. I will read the second in the series to see how the novels are tied together. 4/5

The protagonist in “The Painter” is somewhat different from many other Heller novels. I very much enjoyed his complexity. The book made me feel, in some ways, similar to how I felt reading “The River”.

NatalieR So far, this is my favorite Heller novel. ❤️ 2mo
Pedrocamacho Oh man, @NatalieR! As you might have guessed, I was trying to decide between this one and “The River”! I felt for Jim, even though his violence was always so close to the surface… (edited) 2mo
NatalieR @Pedrocamacho Yes, I figured. 😅 I really want to reread The River. It‘s the only one I listened to on audio and it just wasn‘t the same experience I‘ve had with reading his physical books. The Painter has stuck with me. 2mo

What a meaningful title. Sad but beautiful. The resilience, strength of women and the love of the natural world really shined for me.

I enjoyed this book about folks surviving, hiding, and subsisting in the San Luis valley. Lots of interesting, sometimes tragic, sometimes awful, and sometimes funny stories.

A family history, surrounded by the history of an era of the United States, early 1900s. I haven't exposed myself to a lot of information from that particular time, so this was interesting.
