I didn‘t know exactly what to expect with this scholarly book other than I thought it was about physical western ruins. It turned out to be so much more including the female body seen as a ruin in looking at nymphs in literature and other female figures; discusses ruins in prints such as designed by Piranesi, Dürer, and Rembrandt; how the nativityscene is usually depicted in ruins in art, and my favorite ruins in literature like Wordsworth.
