#CoverStories Day 31: #Prison - Zeba was detained (but more like imprisoned) for the murder of her husband, and awaiting a conviction. All the other incarcerated women committed the crime of fighting back against abusive husbands or family members or accused of having sex outside of marriage – called zina or crimes of immorality – even just a mere suspicion is enough to dishonor a woman and her family. Amazing. A look at the current state of rebellion under the Islamic regime of Iran, following the cruel murder of a young woman by morality police because her headscarf wasn‘t worn perfectly.

The Breadwinner | Deborah Ellis

The Breadwinner was a journey to remember with twists and turns to cherish. The story of a girl and her family against the Taliban soldiers was excellently executed. Parvana, the protagonist, is burdened with the duty of becoming the breadwinner of the family after her father was taken by the soldiers. The family go through a dark time before Parvana comes across Mrs Weera her gym teacher from before the war.

Alaina.Doherty After Mrs Weera gets everyone back on their feet she comes up with a clever idea to make Parvana appear like a boy. She is to change her appearance, name, clothes, and personality to blend in as a boy because women and girls are not to be seen. Parvana was brave and courageous while her family is in need. During this book Parvana meets people from her past life before being forced out of school; including her old friend, Shauzia. 4mo
Alaina.Doherty The two girls find each other and decides to become business partners to help each other out. She is faced with challenges but Shauzia and Parvana‘s ideas to make money work very well and they can stay on their feet. They go on journeys and challenge ideas so they can help their families and help themselves. 4mo
Alaina.Doherty Parvana faces what the Taliban do to people, and is afraid of her life to come. This first person novel is truly fantastic and I wouldn‘t judge the cover on this one. 4mo

Brave Girl tells the powerful story of Clara Lemlich, a young immigrant who led the charge for workers' rights in early 20th-century America. Michelle Markel‘s compelling narrative brings Clara‘s bravery and determination to life, while Melissa Sweet‘s stunning mixed-media illustrations vividly capture the energy of the labor movement.
