I flew through this story and was genuinely moved by it. Although many readers share my positive reaction, I have noticed that there are quite a few who disliked it. I saw common complaints about disliking the MC, her repetitiveness, and believability issues. I'll admit the MC's thoughts were repetitive, and some story elements strained credibility, but neither bothered me much—I was too invested in the story for it to diminish my enjoyment.

Although I enjoyed this book quite a lot, the title is misleading. The actual escape is only covered in maybe the last 50 pages or so of the book. The rest of it is a history of Alcatraz with a focus on its use as a prison. What makes this book so interesting as a historical document is that it was written while Alcatraz was still operational.

It's hard to think of a better symbol for modern America than a private college with a fixed annual enrollment where the subnormal children of billionaires earn largely honorary degrees before going on to inherit and/or marry into their fortunes, situated across a valley from a prison where the inmate population increases exponentially year over year.

I really got into how this is not a typical main character… a bit unexpected framework of a story and it just worked. I don‘t think I‘ve ever rooted harder for a character before.
