I went into this book thinking it might be a more personal deep dive into the hidden abuses revealed in the shiny happy people documentary. It was more about Jill talking about how uncomfortable it was to be on camera all the time, the double standard of how her brother was treated by her father versus how she was treated, and later financial abuse. I‘m glad Jill found her way out of the fundamentalist stranglehold, but I think she‘s still in⬇️

JenniferEgnor deconstruction, as so many of us are. It takes years of work and support from other people to fully get out of it. 6d

A very hard-hitting and honest memoir, about the author's struggles with addiction and sexual abuse. Her resilience, leading to her recovery and ability to share her stories through her writing, is truly admirable.

The Haunting of Velkwood | Gwendolyn Kiste

Mehso-so

With an unusual premise— 20 years earlier, something strange happened to the 8 houses on Velkwood St— only three 20 year olds survived and the rest seem to have instantly become ghosts & no one can enter the vicinity… except for the three now women. Talitha agrees to return for research… and because the past weighs heavily on her. Part ghost story & part love story, there are some creepy moments but nothing was believable enough to be scary…

Susanita I had one of those phones! 2w
TorieStorieS @Susanita Hahaha! I have been clearing things out of my dad‘s basement and couldn‘t bring myself to put it in the donation pile! It‘s a little spooky looking so I‘m going to figure out a Halloween spot for it, hahaha! 1w

I'm a little late for the #OhCanada discussion, but I didn't want to miss out on this book. It's hard to review a memoir, especially one with this much trauma, but I think Knott faced her trauma head on and framed her story well. I'm interested to see what her newer book is like.

Jess861 Glad you got a chance to read it! Memoirs are tough because they are experiences from the authors point of view. 2d

Read this to see what the hype was about, and I get it now!

Took me exactly a month to read this, but I‘m glad I took my time with it, because I sometimes felt that this was way too long.

*Please read all trigger warnings before starting this*

Looking forward to reading the next book!

Reading this was hard since I just recently lost my dad.. BUT it drew me in right from the get go and I think that loosing my dad was part of the reason why. I felt the grief and anger Sidney felt-although for different reasons. When it got to the secrets of June, it hit home as well because I‘ve been there and so many loved ones have been as well. #abuse #death #manipulation #gaslight #LGBTQ+ #teens #love #loss #friends #family

Dilara I am so sorry. I lost my dad back in May and it is painful. 💙 2w
One_With_Books I‘m so sorry to hear you lost your dad too! I lost mine in June and it still seems so surreal. Even as an adult, you never realize how much you still need your parents. 6d

What did you think of Helen Knott as a storyteller? Are there any others areas of her life that you'd enjoy reading about if she were to write another book? Would you like to see her diversify outside of memoirs if she chose too? General thoughts on the author?

Jess861 Such a magnificent storyteller and so brave to be able to tell her story. I will read all books by her - she has a gift! 4w
Ruthiella I think she could write a novel if she wanted to. I know some people (on Goodreads) had an issue with how she structured the memoir so only pieces of her story are doled out at a time, but I thought that was well done. 4w

Kitta I forgot to read this one. Whoops! 4w
Jess861 @Kitta No worries - hope you get a chance to read it one day - it's a good one! 3w
kwmg40 Knotts is a very good storyteller and I think she could succeed with a novel. I did read her newer book, Becoming a Matriarch, before I'd read this one, and in hindsight, it would have been better to read the books in the order in which they had been written. I found that, recalling Becoming a Matriarch, it seems to pale somewhat in comparison to In My Own Moccasins. 3w
