Absolutely heart wrenching
I went into this book thinking it might be a more personal deep dive into the hidden abuses revealed in the shiny happy people documentary. It was more about Jill talking about how uncomfortable it was to be on camera all the time, the double standard of how her brother was treated by her father versus how she was treated, and later financial abuse. I‘m glad Jill found her way out of the fundamentalist stranglehold, but I think she‘s still in⬇️
With an unusual premise— 20 years earlier, something strange happened to the 8 houses on Velkwood St— only three 20 year olds survived and the rest seem to have instantly become ghosts & no one can enter the vicinity… except for the three now women. Talitha agrees to return for research… and because the past weighs heavily on her. Part ghost story & part love story, there are some creepy moments but nothing was believable enough to be scary…
I'm a little late for the #OhCanada discussion, but I didn't want to miss out on this book. It's hard to review a memoir, especially one with this much trauma, but I think Knott faced her trauma head on and framed her story well. I'm interested to see what her newer book is like.
Read this to see what the hype was about, and I get it now!
Took me exactly a month to read this, but I‘m glad I took my time with it, because I sometimes felt that this was way too long.
*Please read all trigger warnings before starting this*
Looking forward to reading the next book!

Reading this was hard since I just recently lost my dad.. BUT it drew me in right from the get go and I think that loosing my dad was part of the reason why. I felt the grief and anger Sidney felt-although for different reasons. When it got to the secrets of June, it hit home as well because I‘ve been there and so many loved ones have been as well. #abuse #death #manipulation #gaslight #LGBTQ+ #teens #love #loss #friends #family

What did you think of Helen Knott as a storyteller? Are there any others areas of her life that you'd enjoy reading about if she were to write another book? Would you like to see her diversify outside of memoirs if she chose too? General thoughts on the author?
