The North Water | Ian McGuire

#favinaugust is North Water. The book is a perfect combination of brutality / violence / atrocity with great descriptive prose and characters that are all evil and I love it. The basic story (Whaling) develops on the several levels with a common point - survival.

BookishTrish I read the first chapter two days ago and had to put it down to recover. It's worth persevering? 8y
RealLifeReading And it's blurbed by Hilary Mantel!! 8y
Simona @BookishTrish If the brutality in the first chapter is problem for you, then it makes no sense to read it, because the whole story is very cruel and bloody...but it's very nice written😃 8y

BookishTrish @Simona brutality I can get behind; brutality directed at a child not so much. Should I bail? 8y
Simona @RealLifeReading Yes it's and in some editions by Colm Toibin "Riveting and darkly brilliant." 8y
Simona @BookishTrish I think- no. A more detailed response follows, because it's kind of a spoiler. 8y
Simona @BookishTrish Even more cruel murder of a child occurs later, but it is an important to the story and character development. 8y
BookishTrish Thanks, @Simona If I keep going I'll be sure to read it during the day then. 8y
Simona @BookishTrish O, it's not so terrible, that you would not be able to read it before going to sleep😨 8y
