'Horrostor' has a great concept: take the Haunted House trope and set it in a modern department store modelled along the lines of Ikea. The cast of characters runs the gamut from earnest store supervisor and sarcastic check out operator to a couple of wannabe Ghost-Hunters. My only reservation is that it feels like a novelisation of the film that seems, on the basis of the novel's original concept, to be almost an inevitability.

With more pithy anecdotes than Batman has gas capsules in his utility belt, any fan of pop culture, the Dark Knight (or anyone for whom the phrase 'Bat-nipple' elicits a Pavlovian desire to throw an explosive batarang at Joel Schumacher) needs to read this.

I loved 'Black Science' so was thrilled to discover another Remender title. Low is set in an undersea world, where the last vestiges of civilisation have retreated to the ocean depths to shield themselves from a dangerously overheated sun. The strengths of Black Science are also found here, with gorgeous art and a real sense of a family in mortal danger. Grim reading in parts, but worth diving into (sorry!).

Regardless of your stance on the use of violence to further progressive/anti-authoritarian causes, this book will challenge you and may well lead to a more searching examination of your beliefs than anticipated.

Only halfway through and this is already an outstanding companion for Patrick Cockburn's examination of the beginning of ISIS.
