Biloxi | Mary Miller

Pickpick

Mary Miller shows us 21st C Southern culture through her character Louis McDonald Jr and his dog. Her dry humor makes this a delightful read.

Heavy is at the top of my stack for the Eudora Welty Writers‘ Symposium. KieseLaymon will be our keynote author, October 10-12, 2019, at Mississippi University for Women!

JamieArc If you have time, the audiobook of Heavy is really well-read. I believe the author does it himself, and he reads it so rhythmically, I couldn‘t imagine myself getting it right while reading. 5y
Kdunkelberg Good to know. I‘m not a fan of audio books, but when the author reads it‘s another experience. Of course anyone can come hear him live and ask questions at the Symposium. I‘ve had that experience before with him, so I can hear his voice as I read. It does make a difference. (edited) 5y

Approaching the Magic Hour: Memories of Walter Anderson | Agnes Grinstead Anderson, Patti Carr Black
Pickpick

This very personal account of the author and her husband Walter Inglis Anderson is fascinating on many levels. It explores his art and his struggles with mental illness and recovery, and tells the story of how she and the family lived with this.

Landscapes and Architectures: Poems | Florida Literary Foundation Press
post image

This is my first book of poems. It deals with themes of love, travel, loss, displacement, and of course the landscapes and places I have lived. Some poems were written in college, some performed at Chicago's poetry slams. They range from introspective to very public performance poems.

Before He Finds Her | Michael Kardos
Pickpick

Michael Kardos pens a thriller with enough character to keep literary readers interested and enough suspense to keep it thrilling. There is plenty of humor, too. No spoilers in this review, but hats off to you if you guess the end before the final chapter!

I translated these poems into English. They were written in the early 1960s in Flemish (the Dutch spoken in Belgium). Originally these were 3 books, each focusing on one of the three men of the title. The poems are very surreal. Definitely not historical!

This is my dissertation in comparative literature from the University of Texas at Austin (1994). One part has been published as Hercules, Richelieu, and Nostradamus. The title says it all!

I won't rate this, since I wrote it! These poems explore the world, life, and art of Walter Inglis Anderson, who lived in Ocean Springs, MS, and camped on Horn Island to draw and paint.
