I just do not enjoy chick lit. Read an enthusiastic review for this book as a page turner, so I stuck with it, but couldn't wait for it to end.

Eilis Lacey is one of those characters whose voice gently slips into your psyche and feels like your very own. Her bravery, her cowardice, and her discoveries about herself are compelling and endearing. As soon as I finished it, I wanted to begin again.

A beautifully written book. The voice of our narrator Mr. Stevens and his colleague Miss Kenton are so clear and evocative that the characters nearly materialize from the page, sporting the uniform of servants of great English houses from the early 20th century.
