For a Few Demons More | Kim Harrison
post image
Pickpick

Rachel is just going to have to accept her life isn't normal. Demons showing up in her kitchen and learning how to twist curses was never her plan. But the world isn't as black and white as she wanted to believe. Though this one is a bit slower than the previous books, it is important to the series and broke my heart. Well done Kim, well done.

Clockwork Angel | Cassandra Clare

While I enjoyed this one, there are a lot of Shadowhunter terms thrown around without any explanation. Someone new to the world can become confused. Clockwork Angel is the prequel of Cassandra Clare‘s Shadowhunter novels. Returning to a world I know and love was great, even if I didn't connect to the characters as much as I did from the other series.

Lost War: Eidyn Book One | Justin Lee Anderson
post image
Pickpick

The war for Eidyn may be over, but the horrors that follow are just beginning.
Every word of this novel sinks you deeper into Eidyn and its heroes. You laugh, you cry, and you hold your breath as they battle for their belief in a better world. This is one high fantasy you don't want to pass on. I could not put this down. I had to read it every moment I could.

E M P Honeymoon: Kelly & Tom | Dorothy May Mercer
post image
Mehso-so

This is a fast read. The plot is pretty simple. While on their honeymoon, Kelly and Tom find out about a secret that may threaten the United States. The two newlyweds do everything they can to try and stop it. There were too many characters for me. No one really had their chance to shine. It was ok. I didn't hate it, but I wouldn't read it again.

I enjoyed the story of Keana. The cruelties she endured forged her into a strong and capable young woman. Like any teen, she makes headstrong decisions that put her in the middle of trouble. It‘s these antics that made me love the character. Keana‘s personality and blunt attitude towards everything made me laugh and lightened up the political moments.

The Faerie Guardian | Rachel Morgan
post image
Panpan

The beginning of this story was filled with action and world-building. Rachel Morgan brought to life the magical world of Creepy Hollow. The interactions between Violet and Nathan were comical as the two tried to understand their different customs and technology. Unfortunately, once I made it through the first part of the book, the rest seemed to fall to pieces.

This had potential. Adam was a tormented character, fighting against feelings he knew he shouldn't have. If the story had stayed on just Adam, I would have loved this book. I didn't find Carly's viewpoint as interesting.
Overall the story of the Descendents was ok, but the world-building could use some work. There were some information dumps I could do without.

Five Feet Apart (Media Tie-In) | Rachael Lippincott

Pickpick

Do not approach this book thinking it is going to be another Fault in our Stars. Stella and Will are vastly different characters than what you experience in Fault. While they are teenagers, Rachel Lippincott was able to show how coming to terms with a disease like CF makes them mature in ways other teenagers have not. An emotionally charged read.

Cimorene doesn't want to be a regular princess. She would much rather live among the dragons than sit in a castle all day sewing. In this hilarious tale, Cimorene embarks on an adventure to become a dragon's princess.

This is the perfect introductory book to the fantasy genre. Suitable for young readers and teens.

I think this is a great book for early teens. The writing style is simple and to the point. However, around page 49 it seems like an old chapter draft was kept in the story. The writing abruptly started repeating itself, and the turn of events changed a bit. There were also cases of font changing in the eBook. The character relationships could have been developed better, but there is plenty to keep a young boy reading.

So many people have recommended this book. I was hoping for something similar to Watership Down, where the reader views the world through a dog's perspective. Instead the dog was too human and made bad jokes about being a dog. And I didn't buy the fact he learned everything from tv. I couldn't bring myself to finish it

I love any story with a strong female lead, and Tam is exactly that. She doesn't immediately fall head over heels for the male protagonist. Instead it's a realistically awkward journey as she realizes her feelings. I totally understood what she was going through. Been there, done that!
It has monster hunting, romance and mystery!

Katsa is a Graceling, born with the ability to kill a man with her bare hands. Forced into killing for her King, she hates her ability. She is quick to anger, and if she loses control she will kill. I expected the story to stay on Katsa's struggle. Unfortunately, when Po shows up, everything seems to revolve around him. I wanted more of Katsa. I could care less about Po.

Every Heart a Doorway | Seanan McGuire
post image
Pickpick

Seanan McGuire has created a beautifully dark novel filled with murder and mystery. Each child has their own story to tell. And some have darker secrets than others. They long to go back to their perfect worlds, but their doorways have closed. When I came to the end of this book I was left aching for more. I feel like I am one of them, grasping at straws trying to enter a world that I didn't want to leave.

Zombieland meets Shaun of the Dead in this satirical story of the zombie apocalypse.
Tripp never expected the zombie apocalypse. Who would be dumb enough to start one? Well someone did. It's called Necropoxy. Surrounded by poxers, Tripp and his sister Trina have to fight their way to safety.
I loved the diverse group of characters. My favorite was an autistic boy who was an active part of the group's survival. Great read!

I bailed on Throne of Glass. I never thought I would try Maas again, but my book club convinced me to.
I will admit Feyre was a good character to follow. She was independent and willing to do what she had to in order to survive. But the amount of filler in this book frustrated me. There was so much potential and Feyre spends days doing nothing in every situation. I'll give it one more book before giving up.

Scarlett was not an enjoyable character. She was meek and second-guessed herself all the time. I hoped her character development would make her confident, but it didn't. There was more relationship building than character development. Romance never sells a book for me.
The mechanics and world-building of Caraval won me over. Full of twists and turns, the reader must decide what is real and what is part of the game. I'm willing to try book two.

Kirito and Asuna must fight to survive the death game Sword Art Online has become. If you read the original light novel then you'll notice some changes in the storyline, but I assure you major events have not changed and they make it a better read! A fan of video games, especially MMOs, will enjoy this series. Of course my favorite part is watching Kirito and Asuna's relationship develop and grow into what I am familiar with from the show :)

Kailey lost the love of her life years ago, at least she thought, until she finds Cade homeless and unable to even recognize her. Engaged to be married, Kailey must balance between helping Cade and life with her fiance Ryan. It was heart warming and heart breaking at the same time.

I suggest this book if you are a fan of an author included in the anthology. If you aren't a fan, the drop in world building can make you stumble. I read this for Kim Harrison's Two Ghosts for Sister Rachel. It felt like coming home to friends I've missed since the Hollows ended. I also enjoyed The Harvest by Vicki Petersson, which made me interested in her Zodiac series, but the other two stories were a bit too sexy for me.

This time Dante comes face to face with her haunted past at Rigger Hall and the atrocities committed against its students, including Dante. Someone is murdering former students and Gabe turns to her for help. Dante is a damaged character who tries to redeem herself each day, but she isn't just battling her own demons, guilt and confusion are attacking her too. Fast paced action and a badass heroine make this a great read.
