Pickpick

The Glass Castle is about a girl named Jeannette Walls who has a difficult family life. Her and her siblings experience neglect, abuse, sexual abuse, etc. The book discuses the importance of family and forgiveness. Rex and Rose Mary Walls experienced abuse as children which then lead the children into receiving the same type of abuse. The second half of the book is based on Jeannette Walls living in the desert which was very intriguing to her.

Maude.Pariseau Her earliest memory was being on fire. At the age of three she was making herself hot dogs when her dress caught on fire. In teaching her children to be self-efficient, the kids are often in danger of hurting themselves. Life in the desert comes to an end when Rex‘s alcoholism get worse and the family runs out of funding. Rose Mary encourages the family to move to Welsh, where Rex is from, with hopes to get help from family. 2y
Maude.Pariseau Much of Rex's issues stem from childhood abuse which is the reason he did not want to move back to his hometown. (edited) 2y

Pickpick

The Glass Castle is about a dysfunctional family shaping Jeannette Walls in the woman she is today. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they moved from place to place. Rex was a brilliant man who, captured his children's imagination, teaching them many things. Rose Mary couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family.

Maude.Pariseau If you like books that involve dysfunctional families and poverty, this book is for you 2y
Maude.Pariseau Abuse is a major theme in this book. This theme is present in the story because Jeannette goes through many abusive relationships through her life. In the story, Rosemary points out that many of the people in their lives come from broken homes and abusive situations. This proves that their broken home contributed to their violent characters. 2y
