Atomised | Michel Houellebecq

Michel Houellbecq, the one time enfant terrible of French literature does not let up with his first two books that essentially attach the Left, Right, men, women, religion, authority and more as they put into words the pain and depression of the white male who in middle age realises it will never get better, and it already stinks. Great innovative reads..

The Blade Itself | Joe Abercrombie

➕ Game of thrones style epic with a larger focus on more ordinary people. A world that has long forgotten magic. A central empire sitting on its laurels feeding off of the masses. Dark humour. Cold, evil reality of death, powerlessness and torture. Following numerous characters from within and without the empire.
Recommended series - The First Law.

Rage | Stephen King, Richard Bachman

Mehso-so

A notoriously hard to find book, more rated for its notoriety than its actual content in my opinion.

Definetly ahead of its time - student kills and holds classmates hostage... but written in the 1960s, unfortunately dated. Still an interesting read though... seen through the eyes of the 1960s.

The Secret History | Donna Tartt

This hugely popular Tartt read... I've just read for a second time, still my least fave of her books, and yet still a great piece of work and a dazzling debut!

I wholeheartedly recommend that everyone reads all three of her masterpieces.

Best book I've read in a long time! If you haven't read it, I implore that you do.
Come and spend the 1st year in a public school with facially disfigured Auggie, and from 1st person views of other children and teenagers in his life.
Heartbreaking and heartwarming.

I thought I would really like this book, and it is pretty spot on about Twitter and social media use in general... but I often feel some sort of unintentional snobbery that riles me about journalists on the Left that runs contrary to their supposed core values. That asides it is very funny at times and still a must read, especially for people familiar with social media.

RadicalReader @Tundextra this seems like a phenomenal book I love books that truly capture you because of modern impressions and inventions to be translated into terrific pocketable knowledge bases also known as books 5y
Tundextra @RadicalReader Pat, very well said I completely agree. 👍😊 5y
KateFulfordAuthor I share the “feeling of rile” you describe 4y
Tundextra @KateFulfordAuthor I just find so many people on the Left hypocritical in regards to the tone and language they use to demean political opponents! So you can disagree with Theresa May, but if you use gender specific vulgarity that's hugely hypocritical! ...Like the anti-Jewish sentiment of some Corbynistas! 4y

A wondrous read - a fictional biography of Dominican Republic, New Jersey immigrant, Oscar Wao and his most recent antecedents.
Lots of fantasy, sci-fi, comic book etc. references as Oscar is very geeky!
About the transfer of violence from rulers to the ruled, with some magical realist themes.
Very innovative!

Yet again in this series, a well thought out reality, with an interesting ongoing storyline leading to a solid finale and epilogue... in my opinion marred by way too much focus on the romantic liaisons of numerous characters. Overall an enjoyable read, but not one I'd ever want to read again or even keep a copy of the book.

Jamesfahyauthor I hate when there's too much focus on romance and angst and you just want to get back to the wonderful plot 😁 5y
Tundextra Exactly @Jamesfahyauthor especially when it is formulaic 'will they, won't they' or 'what you wouldn't do for love' tropes . 5y
Grim_Reader I've not read this yet, from what I've seen you either love it or hate it. 5y
Tundextra It's OK @Grim_Reader ...the constructed reality is interesting, but the romantic storylines are a bit juvenile. 5y
Grim_Reader Oh that sucks, 😏 5y

A wonderful long hot summer murder mystery, as King uses the Hard Case Crime imprint to tell the story of 21 year old student Devin's summer of working at an indie theme park in the 1970s. Love, loss and mortality all wrapped up in a murder mystery. A heart warming read with lots of feel-good moments!

Not particularly a great piece of work, but a well thought out look at the nature of stories. The book itself recounts the story of The Colorado Kid whilst continually reiterating why it is NOT a news story. Although well written it feels like it would have worked better as a short story in a collection.
