My selected book for #ReadHarder2020 “Read a book about a natural disaster”. I lived in Chicago all my life and never really had to deal with natural disasters. This is scary stuff but the author‘s resilience is evident in the graphic novel. He also incorporates other folks stories of that night through interviews.

I read this for the Book Riot #ReadHarder Challenge prompt “Read a Graphic memoir”. It‘s really awesome to read such a candid story to understand one person‘s intimidate experience with gender throughout their life. Maia uses e, eir, eim pronouns and details the struggles with eir body growing up, coming out, sexuality and more. Definitely worth the read and the art is very pleasing. #GraphicNovel #LGBTQIA+ #ReadHarder2020 #Memoir

I wanted to like this more than I did. I‘m appreciative of the diversity in the story as far as race, sexuality, and size. It‘s very nice to see a plus sized girl in a cute outfit! Seeing protective styles on Black girls. It was those types of elements in the art that resonated with me. I wasn‘t very invested in the storyline though. #GraphicNovels #WonderWoman

DC Universe is great for my catching up on oldies. I think having watched Arrow & Justice League animated series helped ease my transition to characters I otherwise wouldn‘t know and therefore care about much. I read this for a book club. I like that this is a quick read and not a super heavy academic text or inaccessible overview of core ideas around Black #feminism. The book touches on how Black women‘s sexuality is policed, respectability politics, fatphobia, and overall misogynoir. If you‘re already well informed on how Black women are treated in society this is a refresher. For folks new to some of these ideas this is a good place to start.

Camp So-and-So is told through an omniscient narrator‘s voice and follows 5 cabins of girl campers at a camp that‘s not really a camp. That‘s really all you need to know or would want to know so that everything else can be a surprise. This is a Young Adult horror novel so it wasn‘t super scary or gory and read pretty quickly, although by 60% through the book I was ready for the story to conclude. #YA #Horror #CampSetting

WHOA. And Blake Crouch does it AGAIN. This is edge of your seat sci-fi thriller. After “Book One” it‘s impossible to put down. Can‘t even give too many details here or I‘d risk giving spoilers. It felt like FOREVER finishing this book. The premise is great: in this society where women are treated as property, and overall dehumanized, there is magic (also generally only acceptable for men to use). A spell is cast that threatens the patriarchy giving women more choice and power. The story includes what I find is the most repulsive male character since Joffrey in Game of Thrones. But I‘m invested in the story enough to read the second book.

WitBeyndMehsure Also want to add that there‘s some serious world building and political maneuvering with not so much action. A great high fantasy feminist epic as it‘s described! 3w

So from issue #5 through 8 we got a new artist because Dan Mora left to presumably do Once and Future (I‘ll allow). But the art now is just.....I‘m an anti-fan. All the characters look shocked all the time and they no longer resemble the actors. Writing is still good though. They‘re gearing up for a Hellmouth crossover with Angel and #8 does GREAT set up. This is such an interesting read. In the 60s a group of four women invent time travel. After a few trips one has a mental breakdown and is hospitalized. From there we jump around in time to other characters‘ POV and look at how the Time Conclave stigmatizes mental health issues. There‘s also a murder mystery? Could be uncomfortable read if triggered by bad opinions of mental health, but the author is a psychologist so the topics are in good hands

While I felt this books gave me easily digestible information about what the author has termed “Millenneagram” (based on the Enneagrams) the tone in this felt very forced. Like that “hey fellow kids” meme. I also wish it helped you determine your wing (or am I both? Confused) but interesting stuff nonetheless. Your section is probably a short read. #Enneagrams
