The Book of Essie: A novel | Meghan MacLean Weir
post image

Went to my first book signing tonight (but certainly not my last)! My local bookstore hosted Meghan MacLean Weir, who is a doctor at the hospital in town. She was very well spoken and it was super interesting to hear her perspective on the writing and publishing process as well as how her life has inspired her writing. Super thankful that my local bookstore was able to offer this event 😊

britt_brooke Fun! 2y

My heart hurts after finishing this one, but my goodness it was incredible ❤️❤️ so beautifully written, it put me through a roller coaster of emotions. Leni is an amazing character who has to endure far too much for a young girl but it was satisfying to see her character develop over the course of the story, as well as her mother's character. This has officially made Kristin Hannah a must-read author for me. Go read this book!!!

Final catch-up review! My last read of February, this was a good conclusion and faithful to the first two books in the trilogy. It suffers from some of the same weaknesses as the first two (in my opinion): too many characters, and too much designer name-dropping. But the food descriptions and snarky footnotes are as good as ever, as are the dramatic family members.

Loved this one ? read this in January and it was my first five star book of the year. This botanist's memoir covered a lot in a small number of pages, and Jahren writes beautifully about her work, her struggles with mental health, and best of all her lab partner, Bill. As a woman in STEM I appreciated her honesty about sexism in the workplace and her struggle to be taken seriously.

The first of a few reviews I'll be catching up on today! I really enjoyed this entire trilogy despite the questions that still remain at the end of this third book. The writing is wonderful and descriptive. I understand why some felt that there were too many loose ends but I thought the conclusion was fitting for such a weird (in a good way) series of books.

Book #2 finished this weekend ? I'm glad I decided to do a few challenges this year or I may never have picked this up. The author was just a child when her family had to flee Vietnam and she tells her parents' stories of growing up during a succession of wars and how it affected her relationship with them. Heartbreaking at times but an important part of history to understand.

I'm still not really sure how to feel about this book, but once I got into it I couldn't put it down. A bit hard to follow the timeline at some points but I got more used to the (very peculiar) narrator/MC as I got deeper into the book. There were a few storylines that had some parallels but didn't come together as much as I would have liked.

I‘ve never done a reading challenge before but I‘m considering the popsugar 2018 one for next year. I‘m a little worried about the book total (I‘m currently at 26 for this year) and also worried about getting distracted by books that don‘t line up with the prompts! However, I think it would be fun to change it up. Anyone doing this challenge or have thoughts on reading challenges in general?

danibolahood I'm doing it as well but I look at it less like a challenge to read x number of books and more of a way to keep me excited about reading. I don't do well sticking to lists and the more I feel I HAVE to read something the less I want to read it. However - whenever I'm having trouble picking something to read I use the prompts to help me find something new or to get me excited about a book I have already and haven't picked up yet. 2y
mjdowens The thought of a reading challenge sounds good to me. Especially to try and read what I️ already have. I️ have tried it a couple of times but I️ can never follow through for very long. I️ have squirrel syndrome and run off to be with other books😂😂 2y
idrinkandiknowthings @danibolahood that‘s great advice, thank you! I definitely want to have a good mix of getting through books I already own and also going outside my comfort zone and reading something I may not have otherwise. 2y
See All 14 Comments
idrinkandiknowthings @mjdowens that‘s what I‘m thinking might happen, but I guess I won‘t know if I don‘t try it out! Sometimes the new and shiny can get distracting 😂 2y
2BR02B I'm planning on doing this one in conjunction with the #MountTBR challenge (my unread book count is at 500+ without ebooks or audiobooks, so I've declared 2018 the year to read what I already own.) Instead of coming up one book to read per prompt before I start, I'm trying to make a list of 3-5 books that would fit each so I always have options to choose from. 2y
idrinkandiknowthings @2BR02B that‘s a great idea- I have far fewer books than that so I‘m hoping I‘ll be able to get through them as long as I have enough willpower to stop buying more 😬😬 2y
mrozzz Does Jo Nesbø count as "Nordic noir"?? 2y
idrinkandiknowthings @mrozzz I'm not sure! I think I'd have to do a little more research before picking a book for that particular prompt 2y
mrozzz I'd join if I could figure that one out and find a heist within a book without spoiling the whole plot... 2y
idrinkandiknowthings @mrozzz there's also a Goodreads group I just joined that has lots of suggestions/discussions for all the prompts! 2y
sprainedbrain I‘m a challenge addict! Popsugar was my first one several years ago, and honestly, challenges + audiobooks + Litsy have more than doubled me reading over the last few years. You can always be flexible, and if you don‘t finish, it‘s no big deal. I‘ve really liked how various challenges have diversified my reading. 😃 2y
mrozzz I think I'm in a similar one, haven't had time to scroll through it all yet! 2y
idrinkandiknowthings @sprainedbrain thank you for the insight! I think I'm going to try this one and see how it goes 😊 2y
readinginthedark I usually set a few reading goals for myself each year, but I‘m not super strict about following the challenges as everyone else does them, because then it becomes stressful and I can‘t enjoy myself. 2y
