Loved! 4.25⭐️s! Continuing my mini-reviews of each story below & in comments.

Smack: Armfield's strength at writing gross, yet captivating descriptions with a sense of foreboding is on full display here. A woman going through a divorce barricades herself inside the beach house where a smack of jellyfish continuously invade the shore, bursting open.

Cassandra After: A woman is visited by her dead girlfriend in this sad tale of shame & regret.👇🏽

lele1432 Formerly Feral: Could not be a more accurate title! Grotesque, unsettling, and filled with olfactory details that will make you want to shower immediately, this was a strange tale about an unlikely pair of sisters. (edited) 13h
lele1432 Granite: Slightly depressing. A woman ignores unsolicited opinions from other women and chooses between solitude and love on her own terms. 13h
lele1432 Salt Slow: A pregnant woman gives birth while living out at sea with her boyfriend, surrounded by monsters in some post-apocalyptic altered present. Great example of writing that shows rather than tells. 13h

Finally finishing this one! Some more highlights:

The Collectables: began with an eerie sinister feeling, & ended with a shocking "oh sh*t!"? Lol this was about 3 friends moving on from their boyfriends, while trying to decide what would make the "perfect man." Turns out there's more going on than meets the eye.

Stop your women's ears with wax: explores female fandom of a female band & how their music turned young girls into the fans from hell.

vivastory This collection sounds like a If you like Black Mirror, Read this book 2d

lele1432 @arubabookwoman lol! It is not entirely rooted in reality so I would say pass. It's not quite as extreme as Red Birds was lol, but it's kind of out there! Although out of the 9 stories you could possibly find one or two intriguing...😊 2d

I was feeling a little bummed there weren't many new releases coming in 2020 that were on my radar, so I looked at Apple books' list of anticipated winter releases and found several #Nonfiction titles that sound fascinating! From heroic investigative journalism (tagged), to dangerous cults protected by the government and the true story behind The Green Book, these are all must-reads for me next year! #NFNov

Received some lovely dark, gothic reads today courtesy of #BOTM. These came in just in time for chilly weather and the holidays!

lele1432 @Megabooks ah good to know! I was on the fence about adding it at first but I've seen so many good reviews for it! And I couldn't resist the blurb about cults and a murder mystery! 5d

I've been working non-stop so my reading time has suffered. I never got to post a #WeeklyForecast! I started Barracoon and the history behind the last slaves brought to America is fascinating. I'm close to finishing Salt Slow, and working on The Case Against Sugar.

#TIL there is a state park in Mobile, AL named after Timothy Meaher, the rich slave owner who smuggled in the last known illegal shipment of slaves. Nothing to see here.🙄🤬 #NFNov

Cinfhen I did a sugar elimination diet this past September .... I lasted 41 days and I felt so good ( well the first 11 days were pretty ugly) Anyway, I‘m trying to get back on it but it‘s soooooo hard. Sugar is literally ADDICTIVE ( it‘s crack for me) I‘m trying but the struggle is REAL!!!!! 6d
lele1432 @Cinfhen yes!! It is crack for me as well. Really really bad. I know I would feel a lot better if I made some drastic cuts but it's so hard! 😩 41 days is quite the feat! 6d

This was so nice, thank you @Nute! I think my favorite self care ritual is a nice warm bubble bath with a book, glass of 🍷 or cup of hot tea, and glowing candles. Some serene music in the background. And a face mask! Makes me feel like I'm at a spa in my own home! 😊

A day late, but wanted to post my #BookReport! It was a really great reading week in terms of quality. Finished 3 books, may finish Salt Slow tonight, & started the tagged book for #NFNov. #TIL diabetes may have been mentioned as far back as the 6th century B.C. by Sushruta, a Hindu physician who described the characteristic sweet urine of those afflicted.
Finished:

Hilarious! I am kicking myself for not getting this #BOTM pick, but now I'll get it as my bday freebie. I loved the MC, Lillian. Her humor was just what I needed! Bittersweet at times, this quirky novel showcases a wide variety of bad parenting lol, but ends on a hopeful note. I never knew combustible kids could be so fun! If you like quirky humor with a side of absurdity, I don't think you'll be disappointed. The #audio is fantastic! 4.5⭐️s!

Rachel.Rencher I had reservations about this one but now I think I need to grab it! 2w

The Great Awake: a strange phenomenon occurs where people's sleep-state removes itself from their bodies, resulting in the owners never being able to sleep. I loved this one. It was surreal, absurd, yet riddled with humor and truths of human nature. Reminiscent of Her Body and Other Parties, Severance, The Need, and Dark Matter all wrapped into one fine-tuned package of fabulism.

Mantis is the first in this collection, and it's a visceral story detailing a young woman's ailing skin condition, while highlighting all the ways in which young girls love to hate their bodies. Becoming increasingly grotesque, by the end reality had slipped and I was unsure if this was metaphor or real, but I enjoyed it.

This really had more substance than I was expecting! Are millennial lives harder than others? Who knows. Are they significantly different? Absolutely. I enjoyed the various perspectives (ex-marine, 1st Gen college grad, editor, pastor) & commentary on burnout, particularly the "always on" blending of life across social media & contract work instability. #TIL there is an app to "curate" your IG grid for personal branding lol. #NFNov

Absolutely♥️this! A tale of human nature where nothing is quite what it seems. Alaine is a hilarious, snarky MC who must come to terms w/ complicated family dynamics & a life that will never be the same. Steeped in rich Haitian culture & history, family curses, a charity start-up, & commentary on sometimes problematic foreign aid, this was a most enjoyable reading experience. The Great Bahni Turpin narrated & I highly recommend the audio! 4.5⭐️s!

Wow, I think I liked this even more than Dark Matter! The 1st half was a little bogged down by the science of what created FMS, but around pg 200 the action & suspense ratchets up & this mind-bender ultimately shows how humans can take a good thing & use it for cataclysmic disaster. Face-meltingly scary stuff. How willing are we to accept pain in life with the good? Are we really living if we have "cheat codes"? This needs to be a film! 4⭐️s!??

lele1432 I will say I had to switch from the audio to print. The male narrator, who also did Dark Matter, was good, but the added female narrator was almost robotic and really took away from Helena's POV. I flew through the pages once I switched. 4w

The core of this story focuses on the effects of the birth of Melody, born to teenage parents, told non-linearly from multiple POVs. It's character-driven, but I never felt an emotional connection that made me invested in the characters' lives. Several major themes are presented, including the Tulsa massacre that destroyed Black Wall Street, sexual identity, parenting & classism, but they felt surface level. Has anyone tried the company #blinddatewithabook? I've been wanting to order from them for a while, & a couple of weeks ago I finally did. I think I've found a new addiction! 😩 The international shipping was faster than expected, & the packaging is so perfect I almost don't want to open them!! I did a #Horror theme, & I'm sure there's bound to be a #Monster in this stack! #ScreamathonPhotoChallenge #Scarathlon #ChillingPhotoChallenge #TeamStoker

suvata I have ordered from them before and, yes, it is totally addictive. I think I still have three or four I haven‘t opened yet. They make great gifts too! 1mo
lele1432 @suvata yes!! I'm thinking it could be great for swaps lol. As I've become addicted to those too. 😂 1mo

4thhouseontheleft The packaging looks so lovely! I have a hard time buying goblins date books for myself, but that is a fun idea to include in swaps! 1mo
TheAromaofBooks Oh no this looks unfortunately reasonably priced! This could be a problem!! 😆 1mo
lele1432 @4thhouseontheleft yes I'm definitely going to keep them in mind for future swaps! Might add as an extra surprise book. 😊 1mo
lele1432 @TheAromaofBooks very unfortunate!! 🤣🤣🤣 1mo
Jee_HookedOnBookz Hi Kaleah! Was wondering if you've received your book? 1mo

#LMPBC #Round7 #GroupC here are my picks! I originally thought I was leaning toward the tagged book, but now I'm torn lol. I have a mix of modern and traditional classics. Let me know your thoughts! Books tagged in the comments.

lele1432 Contemporary classic centered on women living in an inner-city housing project. 1mo
lele1432 Classic crime mystery during Kennedy era in Arizona 1mo
lele1432 Historical fiction classic about the Roman Empire 1mo
See All 17 Comments
lele1432 A dissection of a suburban 1950‘s turbulent marriage 1mo
lele1432 Another John Williams but I couldn‘t resist the description of this melancholy classic of an academic from rural farming roots 1mo
lele1432 He‘s not everyone‘s favorite, but I really like Dostoevsky‘s writing style and his analysis of the human condition. The translation I have in mind has been said to capture more of his intended humor than some others. 1mo
Bookwormjillk Stoner has been on my TBR forever but really I would be happy with any of these 1mo
lele1432 @Bookwormjillk I think you have swayed me. 🤔 I'll wait to see if the others have a preference, but I think Stoner would be a good one! 1mo
BarbaraBB Such good choices you made 💜 1mo
TheAromaofBooks Any of these sound fine with me!! :-) 1mo
lover.of.the.classics 🤔 what to choose? Augustus sounds interesting. 1mo
lele1432 @BarbaraBB thanks!! 😊 1mo
lele1432 @TheAromaofBooks @lover.of.the.classics I think I'll sleep on it and try to decide tomorrow lol 1mo
Jee_HookedOnBookz Hi Kaleah! Your book is finally headed back to you! Shd arrive on Thursday (tomorrow). So so sorry once again for the delay! 😔 1mo

Okay#LMPBC #Round7 #GroupI today was crazy so I'm just now able to post my choices. I'll tag them in the comments as well. 4 contemporary and 2 classics. I'm kind of leaning towards the tagged book, Signs Preceding the End of the World, but let me know what you all prefer!

lele1432 Mexican literature. A young woman must traverse the Mexican-US border to find her brother. (edited) 1mo
lele1432 German literature. I was first introduced to Stefan Zweig through another #NYRB title I read for the #NYRBBookClub, Chess Story. I absolutely loved it. My only 5 star read so far this year. So I've been wanting to try another one of his works. 1mo
lele1432 Hebrew literature. This one is a mystery concerning a hit-and-run. 1mo
See All 10 Comments
lele1432 Another Spanish translation. We decided not to do The Shape of Ruins due to length, but I actually have a copy of this shorter title by the same author. It's intriguing as it deals with a political cartoonist who could ruin politicians' careers with his art. 1mo
lele1432 Classic Indian literature. Described as three stories of forbidden love. Tagore received the Nobel Prize in Literature, the first Asian Nobel Laureate according to Amazon. He was also a poet. 1mo
lele1432 I've been interested in this title for a while now, but it borders on Argentinian folklore/gothic horror, so probably not for the faint of heart. 1mo
Carolyn11215 I‘d love to read Signs Preceding...but would be happy with any of these! 1mo
lele1432 @Carolyn11215 okay great! If @rachelm and @aeeklund don't object, I'll go with that one! (edited) 1mo
BarbaraBB I bought The Post Office Girl Too because of the #NYRBBookClub! 1mo
lele1432 @BarbaraBB I also want Beware of Pity lol. 😊 He was an excellent author. (edited) 1mo

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I want to read this!!! 1mo
lele1432 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I think you'll like it! It really makes you think about mistakes you would redo if given the chance, and also how humans will inevitably mess up things that are meant for good. 1mo
Carolyn11215 I just finished this book. Mind bender indeed! 1mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I may start this one next... Have you read Dark Matter? I have it also... 1mo
OriginalCyn620 👌🏻😊🏈 1mo
lele1432 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I have! I read it a couple of months ago and enjoyed it. Both deal with similar themes. Dark Matter was more focused on one family in particular, while Recursion has broader, world-wide implications. 😊 1mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @lele1432 ok ! Thank you!! 📚☺️ 1mo

The Chain | Adrian McKinty

Mehso-so

This had a great premise, but as other reviewers noted, kind of fizzled towards the end. The idea of an organization forcing child kidnap for ransom was intriguing, & I even liked the background on who was behind the chain. But I wasn't drawn in by any characters except maybe the kids, the bad guys were a bit cartoonishly evil, & by the end the chapters were too short & jumped around too much. Lots of suspension of disbelief required. 2.75⭐️s

Catching up on some #FallIsBooked prompts. #OrangeCover and #Bonfire. These two books are still on my TBR, but I think they are perfect for this Fall season, so I'm moving them up to hopefully read next month!

My current read/listen. A spin on the old school chain letters, this is the stuff of #UrbanLegend, only these parents must continue the chain by kidnapping other children, or their own may end up in a #Coffin! #Screamathon #ScreamathonPhotoChallenge #ScreamathonReadingChallenge #Scarathlon #ChillingPhotoChallenge #TeamStoker 1pt

Well apparently I'm a big scaredy-cat.? I've mastered public speaking thankfully, although it still makes me really nervous. I'm scared of how crazy people are these days. And I've admittedly watched a few too many "Monsters Inside Me" episodes and it's made me terrified of germs and parasites. ? #Scarathlon #TeamStoker 1pt

Whew! I am SO glad I saw this in time! I've been stalking the hashtag to make sure I didn't miss out like I did Round 6 lol. These fill up fast! Literary Fic was full, but it worked out perfectly b/c I slid into the last spot for #GroupC AND #GroupI (Classics & Int'l Translation) which will stretch me but are right up my alley! There are still some groups available! #LMPBC #Round7 https://m.signupgenius.com/#!/showSignUp/5080444aead2ca0ff2-l...

TheAromaofBooks I'm in Group C, too!! I've never participated before so I'm excited. 1mo
lele1432 @TheAromaofBooks yay!! I'm glad you commented lol I couldn't find your handle! I think you're going to enjoy it!This is just my second round. I'm super excited about classics! Our group is full so I'm going to start selecting possibilities for my pick. 😊 1mo
TheAromaofBooks I just got the email with everyone's details, so now I can find the people. :-D I'm leaning towards a children's classic since those are the ones I'm most familiar with. Do you have a book in mind yet? (edited) 1mo
lele1432 @TheAromaofBooks oh I need to check my email!! A children's classic sounds like a great choice! I'm looking through some New York Review Book Classics and Penguin Classics and was going to try to get a consensus on what everyone wanted to read out of my choices. I think I may throw Revolutionary Road into the mix too. 1mo

Now that I've added my wonderful #Screamathon books, I can post my "official" yet ridiculously over-ambitious #ScreamathonPhotoChallenge #SpookyTBR! Also including for my #FallIsBooked #OctoberTBR. Somehow, my new favorite candle didn't get featured in my previous #ScreamathonSwap posts, so it gets one of its own! @Sg1224 it smells AMAZING!! And I just love the little owl on top!! ????
