Bookclub. Soft pick. One of the most harrowing books I‘ve read. It‘s definitely a pick but it‘s a strange one as I could have quite easily have closed it at anytime and not picked it up again. Because of the material not because of it being badly written etc. I‘m still trying to process what I think and I may come back later and add to this review but I just wanted to get it done as life is hectic at the moment and my time on Litsy has suffered.

I listened to this. I was thoroughly captivated by the characters and the insights into the gaming world. It‘s a story about the ups and downs of friendship. Looking out and after your friends in the good times and the bad. One of life‘s greatest gifts is the love of friends. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

I picked this book for our book club because a lot of it is set in Egypt and I am going there in a month‘s time for a holiday! Everyone gave it 3 stars or above.
Most people will not like Claudia, who is on her death bed, reminiscing the past. I‘m ok with unlikeable narrators. Claudia was way ahead of her time in so many ways. All the things that made her unlikeable as a woman, would be overlooked if she were a man. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

BarbaraBB Oh yes I loved this one too 3mo

Northern Ireland in the 70‘s is a scary place! I was most affected by the young school children who are forced to grow up way before they should. Their childhoods stolen by the reality of life in conflict. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

😬 This book is bloody terrifying! So brutal in so many ways! I haven‘t been able to stop thinking about it. Who is the monster exactly? The fifth child Ben or the mother, the family or society? It also made me think about motherhood and how you are damned if you do and damned if you don‘t. Someone always suffers. The depictions of the pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding of Ben made me feel really squeamish 🤮
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

I loved the couple of weeks we were locked down together, my boys with me 24/7. I listened to this. My latest bookclub book. I haven‘t read a modern crime novel in a while and this was a pleasant surprise! I was reminded of my time as a police officer. The good and the bad. It also made me laugh.
#Ozfiction

CarolynM I need to try Peter Temple. I recommend Garry Disher if you fancy more modern crime #ozfiction. 5mo
Rissreads @CarolynM I don‘t do much crime. I think I read way too much of it in my early 20‘s and I lived it for 10yrs. I‘m also very selective with crime novels. It has to be realistic and well written. Peter Temple wrote the Jack Irish tv series, which is fantastic! 5mo
CarolynM Not that I have any lived experience of policing, but I think Disher‘s Hirsch series is pretty realistic. My husband had two uncles who were country cops in SA. He only just made it through the first in the series because he was triggered by it 5mo

This book was a surprise. The writing style was very poetic and emotive. It is a beautiful story of love between two young black artists in London. But it is also a story about trauma. Dalton really knows how to pull on your heart strings, even if most of the plot is far fetched.
I do feel like he romanticises homelessness and the writing is let down by him trying to include too many facts about these issues so therefore it comes across as not genuine conversation. #Ozfiction ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
It will make another great tv series, and I couldn‘t help but think that‘s exactly what he was thinking when he mentions Nicole Kidman etc

Megbert I saw Trent speaking last month & he acknowledged this criticism about “romanticizing homelessness” which has obviously been made a few times. He disagrees with this idea & he bases it on his friendships with homeless people who tell him that despite what those on the other side of the fence may think, they have great days, successes & big dreams too. Agree it does end up like a fast paced action film but I did appreciate his sentiments on this. 5mo

I listened to this but I will be buying a physical copy. This book made me move between two emotions. Rage and despair. How is it that it‘s 2024 and we still have such inequality for women. Half the population! This fight is so exhausting! More men reading books like this would be a start! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Bookbuyingaddict @Rissreads Iv had this on my TBR for yonks after listening to an interview with the author, I think at the moment it would upset me too much. Just last week hate speech was made a crime in Scotland but controversially misogyny was not included as a hate crime. As you can imagine there has been a lot of discussion and debate about that !! 7mo
Rissreads @Bookbuyingaddict I feel like we are just banging our heads on a wall and going around and around the same circle. 7mo
bookandbedandtea I read about a third of this and was so demoralized I put it aside. I've been thinking that I'm about ready to dip back into it though. 7mo
Bookwomble @Bookbuyingaddict The arguments about not including misogyny as hate speech seem to come down to it being so prevalent and culturally embedded that it would overwhelm the courts if it was made a crime, and "the Wokerati won't let you say anything these days". 6mo

I really enjoyed this. It was refreshing to read something so original. Wren and Lewis have just gotten married when Lewis receives the diagnosis that within a year he will mutate into a great white shark. You would be forgiven for thinking that this is a horror story but It‘s actually a tender story of love and sacrifice. You could also presume to think that this is a silly story but it‘s actually very astute. ♥️ 🦈

This book had me thinking all the way through, run! No stay! No run! No stay! What a moral dilemma Dana faced as a slave. Protect myself or protect others? This book reminded me of how in nature when there is a bird who is different or injured, so then all the other birds gang up on it and peck it to death. That‘s how I felt poor Sunday was treated by everyone around her, including her daughter Dolly. I had a sense of dread throughout waiting for Sundays heart to be smashed to pieces and mine with it. The hospital scene with her mother made me sob it was so brutal and cruel. It was refreshing to ⬇️

A fantastic start to my holidays! Reading by my friends pool (yes I did swim!) and eating fairy bread!
This is my book club book. It‘s a short, quiet, reflective read. It‘s a book about a 6 year old girl and her grandmother over one summer on an island. Not much really happens but it‘s beautiful and atmospheric. I hope to one day have grandchildren of my own who I can ramble around with in nature just enjoying life and each others company.

LeeRHarry Look at you with your fairy bread! 🥰 Happy New Year Nerissa 😊 (edited) 10mo

This book 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I‘m always trying to educate my 2 sons so that they will be good men. Allies to ALL women, not just the women they ‘know‘. Books like this one are so important to this journey.
I took my 2 sons and their 2 friends away for Christmas and gifted them all this book. 🤞🏼Fingers crossed they actually read it!

Reggie Good for you! One time I took a book of Rupi Kaur‘s poetry and I read that one that goes-Women let‘s not make battlegrounds of each other‘s bodies. We had catty girls at the time who were saying horrible things about the way women dressed or looked at our casino. When I read it nobodybut the guys got it. lol Hopefully your book fares better than my poem. 💚 10mo
Rissreads @Reggie well that‘s a bit depressing that the guys got it but not the girls. Yes it‘s true us females need to also be allies to all women and be kind and stop comparing and competing. We need to be other women‘s cheer squads! 10mo
MrsMalaprop Love it Nerissa. Here‘s hoping 🤞 10mo

Old God's Time: A Novel | Sebastian Barry

I‘m going to miss Tom Kettle, what a lovely man. A man who had suffered more brutality, trauma and heartbreak in his life than any man should. Yet despite this he was able to appreciate the joy of his family and was able to love them fiercely. Kettles mind is muddled because of this trauma (PTSD) and possibly dementia so the story goes back and forth between memories, realities and dreams. I liked the fact that this wasn‘t a standard detective ⬇️

Rissreads novel, and that he wasn‘t your standard detective. That would have been a disservice to Kettle. Who although he knew he was a simple man, few men have his empathy or emotional insight into human behaviour. Barry was able to achieve all this with his beautiful writing. What a fabulous book to end the year with! (edited) 10mo

Fascinating! This book went down many rabbit holes. “It all would be so ridiculous- if it weren‘t so serious.” I wasn‘t sure if I should laugh or cry over so much of this book. It nailed the world we are living in, where so many of us have no commonsense. I have admiration for Klein who has been mercifully mistaken, mocked and hounded for another‘s ideals, yet she can still show empathy to her doppelgänger. She deals with it all with such grace.

Whoa, this book is so much more than it appears. Like the Tardis! The author‘s descriptions of Elena‘s Parkinsons were harrowing, the anguish of everyday tasks. The dispair of loosing a child. There is so much to say about this book but it‘s too hard without spoilers. I can see why it got so much Litsy love!
