A squirrel gumbo can be insanely good. A squirrel tastes as good as the animal is athletic and smart. If they were not as athletic and smart as they are, they would not require extermination for the problems they cause, such as penetrating the attic and making alterations to the electrical scheme that are not up to code. So sometimes you find yourself with a supply of them for accent meat in gumbo.

Lindy @lynneamch My friend Robyn spent a lot of time watching squirrels in her garden. She was pleased to get this shot. 7y
Suet624 When I lived in Tennessee I used to see a lot of men coming out of the woods with dead squirrels attached to their belts and a rifle slung over their shoulder. I assume they were making gumbo - or stuffing them and giving them to Jenny Lawson. (edited) 7y

Lindy @Suet624 Jenny Lawson and her love of taxidermy... Yes! 7y
lynneamch @Suet624 My husband says his grandfather in Southern Illinois wouldn't let him shoot squirrels in the head, because his grandmother liked to eat the brain (raw, as she cleaned it). 😜 7y
Lindy @lynneamch Great story! Not something I'd like to try myself, however. 7y
Suet624 @lynneamch ugh. Yuck! 7y

Pickpick

When my family is out for the night, I cook 'eggs in camicia', toast an English muffin, pour a glass of red wine and tuck into a cookbook. Tonight's selection was less cookbook, more amusing anecdotes on food and memory. It also confirms my observation that people involved in highly creative endeavors generally don't have much interest in cooking. The only recipe that tempted me was contributed by the editor.

Apparently Ruth Ozeki really did produce a Japanese television series designed to introduce beef to Japanese housewives. The work inspired her first novel My Year of Meats, which I just finished. I loved the original concept, without ever imagining it was based on real life events.

BookBabe ? Omg! ?? My book club and I were just discussing her book "A Tale For The Time Being" today! 7y
Spiderfelt In love that one so much it inspired me to read backwards in her catalogue. You know the saying 'truth is stranger than fiction'? My Year of Meats actually fits the bill perfectly. I couldn't imagine how she came up with the idea, but it turns out she didn't have to invent very much. 7y
