Cloth Lullaby
Cloth Lullaby: The Woven Life of Louise Bourgeois | Amy Novesky
11 posts | 11 read | 13 to read
Louise Bourgeois (19112010) was a world-renowned modern artist noted for her sculptures made of wood, steel, stone, and cast rubber. Her most famous spider sculpture, Maman, stands more than 30 feet high. Just as spiders spin and repair their webs, Louises own mother was a weaver of tapestries. Louise spent her childhood in France as an apprentice to her mother before she became a tapestry artist herself. She worked with fabric throughout her career, and this biographical picture book shows how Bourgeoiss childhood experiences weaving with her loving, nurturing mother provided the inspiration for her most famous works. With a beautifully nuanced and poetic story, this book stunningly captures the relationship between mother and daughter and illuminates how memories are woven into us all.

After receiving this book several months ago, I finally read it (just to get it off my coffee table)! How beautiful it was! The words matched the poetry of the illustrations. I'm simply enchanted.

#BookMail! My father has the best clients. One found out I do fiber art and gave him these two books for me. Amazing! I can't wait to read Cloth Lullaby. The other (which will be a feast!) is still in the plastic! What the what?! Time to write a thank you note!

Libby1 @tpixie , @Tamra , @DivineDiana - the book was a complete surprise to me. I almost started reading it to my son because it‘s so gorgeous and is a picture book but then I‘m glad that I didn‘t as it‘s definitely not for his age group. 😬 7y
DivineDiana After I saw your post, I thought about buying for my niece, so I went to Amazon and read some reviews which indicated that. Oops! 7y
tpixie I might have to buy it for myself! It‘s so pretty!! 7y
Libby1 @DivineDiana - yeah. I‘m glad I didn‘t read it to my child but just savoured it on my own! 7y
Libby1 @tpixie - if you do I hope you‘ll like it. It seems she was a fascinating person. 7y

This is a stunningly illustrated story of artist and sculptor Louise Bourgeois. Her art work isn‘t my cup of tea (think giant spider sculptures 🕷), but it this story shows what a fascinating, insightful person she was. I‘ll add some more lovely illustrations from this gorgeous book.

Because the book deals with some very adult issues (i.e. suicide attempts), I think it would be best for teenagers and up.

Cathythoughts Beautiful cover. ❤️❤️❤️ 7y

I knew nothing of the life or works of Louise Bourgeois. Now I am fascinated by her. This book has earned a place in the shelf where I keep picture books that whet my students' appetites for research papers.

Kitta I love this. 🕷 8y

But she was deeply disappointed to learn that math, like life, is uncertain.

There are days when being a librarian is wonderful. This is one of those days. This beautiful picture book was in the new arrivals today. Louise Bourgeois is one of the most important woman artist of the 20th century. This beautifully done picture book tells her life's story. Where everything began and where everything came from.
Her huge metal spiders frighten people when they should reconfort. The illustrations are amazing. 👍👍👍

This is one of the most beautiful illustrated children's biographies I have ever seen. With a deep poppy red and a rich royal blue making swirling around, I had to spend time staring at each page to soak it all in. This covers the life of Louise Bourgeois who was a world-renowned artist, known for her cloth sculptures.
