9 posts | 12 read | 5 to read
'Yes, bastard, you're the one I love'A pair of lovers - a young female journalist and an older man who owns an isolated farm in the Brazilian outback - spend the night together. The next day they proceed to destroy each other. Amid vitriolic insults, cruelty and warring egos, their sexual adventure turns into a savage power game. This intense, erotic cult novel by one of Brazil's most infamous modernist writers explores alienation, the desire to dominate and the wish to be dominated.A new translation by Stefan Tobler

A Cup of Rage wasn't my cup of tea. It's a short, but tedious read: pretty much a long block of violent rage with no purpose.

"...and that makes me think about how dogmatism, caricatures and depravity often go together, and that privileged people like you, dressed up as 'the People', generally look to me like carnival trannies."

Visiting all my favorite bookstores while in San Francisco for CODEX. So much literature in translation at City Lights, including this one that has moved to the top of my TBR pile...

What are your first reads of 2017? We're starting the year out with A CUP OF RAGE by Raduan Nassar (out Jan. 31st), with a side of essential understanding in the form of Arlie Russell Hochschild's STRANGERS IN THEIR OWN LAND. Chickpea brownies courtesy of Phaidon's THE KITCHEN SHELF (not pictured), and amazing mug courtesy of Crimson & Clover! (cameo of a big book we're eager for later this year in the background.)

8little_paws Also this book a cup of rage sounds intense 7y

My post-Thanksgiving book mail from Book Outlet just arrived. I might feel guilty if they weren't so cheap! (1/3)

readordierachel Never feel guilty about Margaret Atwood. 7y
vivastory @ReadOrDieRachel I hardly ever feel bad about buying books. When I feel a slight tinge of guilt, I know I can always count on Litsy. Book enablers unite. 7y
EvieBee Wow! Reading from top down. Awesome haul! I love Bookoutlet. Sigh. 7y

[DELETED] 3323341091 Fat City and The Queue are outstanding reads 😬 7y
LeahBergen Both of the Atwoods are great! (and I want to read The Queue) 7y
vivastory @LeahBergen I have the suspicion that queue may be really overlooked. I heard a lot about it when it first was released but not much since. Kind of surprised I haven't seen it on boty lists. 7y
vivastory @EvieBee84 thanks! It took a week and a half to arrive, well worth the wait. 7y
