"All superheroes get their powers from somewhere. A radioactive spider bite. A science experiment gone awry. I got mine from a surfing accident in Tofino. The ultimate wipeout. I woke up with the most powerful mind on the planet, but a body like a wet paper bag . . ." Meet Westlake Soul, a twenty-three-year-old former surfing champion. A loving son and brother. But if you think he’s just a regular dude, think again; Westlake is in a permanent vegetative state. He can’t move, has no response to stimuli, and can only communicate with Hub, the faithful family dog. And like all superheroes, Westlake has an archenemy: Dr. Quietus—a nightmarish embodiment of Death itself. Westlake dreams of a normal life—of surfing and loving again. But time is running out; Dr. Quietus is getting closer, and stronger. Can Westlake use his superbrain to recover . . . to slip his enemy’s cold embrace before it’s too late?

Pickpick

Westlake Soul is left in a vegetative state after a surfing accident. His soul can go anywhere and he can talk to his dog, Hub, but nothing else. The cynical part of me wants to bitch about trivial things but it doesn‘t and can‘t override the overall beauty of this book and what it has to say about living life. Thanks @rohit-sawant for the vampire rec, Seize the Night, because that‘s how I found Rio who I‘ll be reading more of.

vivastory I was wondering why his name sounded so familiar.. 5y
Reggie @Vivastory he‘s written other books as well. I loved his vampire short story so much I looked for other stuff and surprisingly this isn‘t horror. But it was still great. 5y

I'm so often awed by the impact this little book has made on its readers. I received an e-mail yesterday from a lady who told me she takes a copy wherever she goes, to remain positive during times of struggle. I tell you ... moments like that make all the hard work worthwhile.
