Alters #1
Alters #1 | Paul Jenkins, Leila Leiz (Illustrator), Tamra Bonvillain (Illustrator)
4 posts | 3 read
A world where a war between heroes and villains is being fought to a stalemate, with humanity becoming the collateral damage part of the equation...The heroes know they are losing the war. And in the middle of this world-changing conflict, a new threat seems to be emerging: the Alters. They are mutants, possibly or perhaps they are some kind of ultimate end to our genetic road map. Whatever the case, Alters seem to be emerging all around the country... and they are met with fear, distrust, and prejudice. They manifest new, dangerous powers that emerge without warning.
From a diverse team of creators composed of differing genders, gender identities, ethnic backgrounds and sexual orientations comes a groundbreaking first-ever superhero series with a central transgender protagonist created by a mainstream writer.
As the world struggles to accept the emergence of these Alters, a young woman begins her transition from male to female only to find herself also transitioning into a powerful Alter. Faced with persecution by the multi-powered fascist known only as Matter Man, she will face the world as Chalice--a hero for a new age. But as Chalice navigates the path to becoming her true self, she must juggle the complications of her civilian life and the responsibilities of her newfound power.
This groundbreaking series--years in the making--begins the saga of a young woman who can only really be herselfwhenever she is not herself.

Pickpick

I was skeptical about a cis male writer taking on the subject of a transgirl superhero but it's honestly handled with care and I think Jenkins paid an enormous amount of respect to the struggles of the main character. I can't wait for vol 2.

And, for the record, I can't recommend Aftershock highly enough. They're telling the best stories in comics right now #comics #aftershock

A little on the nose, but it's nice to see another complicated but strong trans representation in comics. The character development is pretty great and I'm glad to be subscribed. (This is from issue 4.)

I listened to the latest Ep. 85 of The Transition Transmission Podcast, having me pause part-way for a look at Alters. #transbooks I haven't found them on iBooks, just yet, but I'm keeping hopeful with a variety of superhero comics there, as Paul Jenkins has written for. I'm hearing exciting great news about this series as a must read!

Dan_SpiderCrafts Another Paul Jenkins mini-series I'm also having a look at is 7y
ohyeahthatgirl I'm not usually into superhero comics, but I really like Alters! Solid art and story, and it's refreshing to have a trans* hero for once. I had to find the first issue on Comixology, but now I have a subscription at my local comic shop. 7y
ohyeahthatgirl Also, try Kim & Kim by Magdalene Visaggio. I'm here for trans* writers doing kickass trans* characters. 7y
Dan_SpiderCrafts @ohyeahthatgirl Thanks! 😊 Kim & Kim looks really awesome as well, having me thinking along the girl band comics of Black Canary, and Jem & The Holograms. I should really save for a downtown Toronto trip, to see what I can find at comic stores. 🎸💫 7y
Dan_SpiderCrafts @ohyeahthatgirl I look forward to checking in with your posts and recommends 🙂 I'm always looking for more *trans books and comics. I'm a big fan of the rock music of Mina Caputo and Laura Jane Grace. ✨ 7y

Blair_Reads I haven't heard of these... 7y
BillBlume @Blair_Reads it's relatively new. Had the pleasure of interviewing the writer Paul Jenkins on some panels at the Broadleaf Writers Conference in Atlanta just after the release of the first issue in September. This creative team is going for some very ambitious goals. 7y
