Winner of the Edgar Award for Best NovelIt is 1836. Europe is modernizing and the Ottoman Empire must follow suit. But just before the sultan announces sweeping changes, a wave of murders threatens the fragile balance of power in his court. Who is behind them? Only one intelligence agent can be trusted to find out: Yashim, a man both brilliant and near-invisible in this world, an investigator who can walk with ease in the great halls of the empire, in its streets, and even within its harems--because, of course, Yashim is a eunuch. His investigation points to the Janissaries, who, for four hundred years were the empire's elite soldiers. Crushed by the sultan, could they now be staging a brutal comeback? And can they be stopped without throwing Istanbul into political chaos? This first book in the Investigator Yashim series is a richly entertaining tale, full of exotic history and intrigue.

Lovely writing and the characters are interesting, as is the setting. I did figure out at least half of the bad guy team about half way, so that was disappointing but it was still fun to read. Inspector Yashim is tasked by two people to solve what he believes are unrelated crimes, and explores the changing social and political landscape of 19th century Istanbul in his attempts to solve both. 3.5/5 read if you enjoy historical fiction

Istanbul in the 1830's. Yashim is on the trail of a conspirary of former soldiers "The Janissaries", trying to solve the murder of a woman in the Sultan's harem and the theft of the Sultan's mother precious jewels given to her by Josephine Bonaparte. The details on the way people live, the city, the "war" the Europeans are waging in the area with the "Great Game" in the background make the plot and action interesting and keep your reading.

A trio of books I have really, really loved set in the Middle East in three different eras. #maybookflowers #setinthemiddleeast

Bailedbailed

I can tell this could be a good read if I were in the right frame of mind for it. There is a lot of context setting for the time period and locale so the plot is secondary. I have put it down for another time. I will probably try it another time, when I have more time to dig in.

Dogearedcopy I think you were probably right to bail. I read this a few years ago, and despite the exotic setting, in the end it was just okay (I think I gave it 3 stars - the ultimate "meh" rating for me.) It wasn't bad; just not compelling enough to want to continue with the series. 9y
HardcoverHearts @Dogearedcopy - bless you for easing my mind on that one!!! 9y
