Hold the Dark: A Novel
Hold the Dark: A Novel | William Giraldi
At the edge of civilization, nature and evil collide in what stands out as one of the decades best books of its kind (Alan Cheuse, Boston Globe). Written with force and precision and grace (John Wilwol, New York Times Book Review) Hold the Dark is a taut and unforgettable journey into the heart of darkness (Dennis Lehane). At the start of another pitiless winter, wolves have taken three children from the remote Alaskan village of Keelut, including the six-year-old son of Medora and Vernon Slone. Wolf expert Russell Core is called in to investigate these killings and discovers an unholy truth harbored by Medora before she disappears. When her husband returns home to discover his boy dead and his wife missing, he begins a maniacal pursuit that cuts a bloody swath across the frozen landscape. With the help of a local police detective, Core attempts to find Medora before her husband does, setting in motion a deadly chain of events in this chilling, mysterious, and completely engaging novel (Tim OBrien) that marks the arrival of a major American writer.

Mehso-so

I originally rated this 3⭐️ on goodreads but just went back and changed it to 2 because since I finished it I haven‘t really thought about it at all. The author is pretty good at describing unrelenting cold but at the same time I found myself wondering if he‘d ever personally experienced it. This is the kind of metaphor-heavy prose style I dislike, too. *shrug*

Wow! Not a happy book but a masterful work or fiction fringed with dark magic and lore. Kept me guessing till the end. Loved it.

What did I just read?! It was suspenseful, chilling & bizarre. I think I have more questions than answers, but I liked it.

There is a movie version coming out on Netflix soon. It looks good too. I actually saw the trailer first, looked it up and of course there's a book originally! Check out the trailer...

Yeah, I made it to end of first chapter before giving up. Just long enough for grieving mother to climb into bed (naked, I might add) with the protagonist whom she‘d just met.

Ever read a book where the author gives every line of dialogue extreme weight? There‘s a reason why the second definition of the word portentous is “done in a pompously or overly solemn manner so as to impress.”

This is a rare gem of modern literature. One of those books that finds me struggling to describe just how good it is. It has the makings of a classic, and Giraldi's literary heritage lies with Melville, Conrad and London.
