White Snow, Bright Snow
White Snow, Bright Snow | Alvin Tresselt, Roger Duvoisin
9 posts | 7 read | 1 to read
When the first flakes fell from the grey sky, the postman and the farmer and the policeman and his wife scurried about doing all the practical things grownups do when a snowstorm comes. But the children laughed and danced, and caught the lacy snowflakes on their tongues. All the wonder and delight a child feels in a snowfall is caught in the pages of this book -- the frost ferns on the window sill, the snow man in the yard and the mystery and magic of a new white world. Roger Duvoisins pictures in soft blue half-tones with brilliant splashes of yellow and red emphasize the gaiety and humor as well as the poetic quality of the text.Print Ed.

White Snow Bright Snow by Alvin Tresselt is a great RF that could be used as a RA to introduce winter. This story gives great detail to the weather and how it affects the people in the town. The seasons and weather changes are introduced in kindergarten and a great standard to go by is https://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewStandard/Preview/2894

BRaulerson The ESOL Strategy I would use is using Venn diagrams to contrast and compare the weather during seasons. It would be beneficial for any student to see how winter (like the one in the story) would differ from summer. #UCFLAE3414F19 5y
DrSpalding You are right! You could use this as an introduction to a winter unit and then use your Bentley book as well. Great idea to use a Venn diagram which of course is a tool that is beneficial to all students including English learners. 5y

I love the use of blue and frosty looking tones in this story. The visuals fully represent the feeling of snow fall.

This story does an incredible job of capturing the excitement of snowfall. The children laughed and danced as the ground slowly was covered in white. I believe this story would be a great read for any elementary school classroom to enjoy the little things in life.

The illustrations do a wonderful job of using color contrasts. The houses and people are bright, unusual colors while the backgrounds are darker.

This story is very detailed in words and pictures. It talks about the changing seasons through the perspective of a policeman, a wife, children, bunnies, and a postman. It is very simple yet creative.

Cute, but you can tell it‘s an aged story for children. You can see how this book won a Caldecott medal, though 👍🏻

One of my very favorite early Caldecott winners (1948)! I remember being introduced to this book in high school while teaching pre-schoolers as part of a child development class!
