Slowly, Slowly, Slowly, said the Sloth by Eric Carle is a perfect read aloud for young children. It also provides repetitive words that the children can read along with you when it comes to that part. The sloth meets other creatures throughout the story and shows the importance of rest. A lesson plan for this story can be found at https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/slowly-slowly-...

BRaulerson A UDL Guideline I would use for this story is promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation. This story will discuss importance of rest which could optimize motivation for the kids. The ESOL Strategy I would use is using direct instruction. Modeling some of the words and actions from the story while reading and explaining the sloth‘s reactions could definitely help the learners comprehension. #UCFLAE3414F19 4y
DrSpalding Wonderful book selection and author! Excellent job aligning universal design and English learner strategies. Direct instruction works perfectly with your teaching strategy of read aloud. 4y

Mister Seahorse | Eric Carle

Pickpick

Mister Seahorse by Eric Carle is a great read aloud for the younger grades. The illustrations alone are so engaging the children will love it! This book talks about the only male to carry eggs in a pouch which is a seahorse! Mister Seahorse meets more dad fish along the way and discusses what they do with the eggs. http://www.makinglearningfun.com/OceanMrSeahorsePrintables.htm has great activities to go along with the story.

BRaulerson The UDL guideline I would use is Highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships. Being able to discuss how the different fish carry or help with the eggs would be a great way to ensure comprehension. The ESOL strategy I would use is reinforcing the key ideas you present again and again by using the different fish and what they do with their eggs. #UCFLAE3414F19 (edited) 4y
DrSpalding You shared your passion for Eric Carle in your author study. Again nice alignment and fun arts integration activity. His artwork is inspiring and students should create collages mimicking his work. 4y

Kingdom Keepers by Ridley Pearson would be a great choice for and independent read or literature circle book. This science fiction digs into the depth of Walt Disney World where five find themselves against Disney Villains and witches. Especially with living in Central Florida, I especially would use this book as many kids could be able to relate to the attraction they‘ve been to.

BRaulerson This book could be used to tie in main idea concepts using standard https://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewStandard/Preview/5767.The UDL Guideline clarifying vocabulary and symbols. With this book being a science fiction, it may have more technical terms that would need to be discussed prior to, or even during the story. The ESOL Strategy would be teach technical vocabulary using key concepts. #UCFLAE3414F19 (edited) 4y
kgarzon Students would definitely be amazed to be reading a novel that takes place somewhere they know or even visited before, letting them actively visualize the story progressing. And if they haven't, then you could easily provide references like videos or a park map to provide context! 4y
DrSpalding Using the Florida Department of education website is a wise choice. This is fun science fiction to introduce central Florida students to. 4y

Anne of Green Gables a graphic novel by Mariah Marsden is a great way to encourage historical fiction in a more entertaining way. The story is about a family who lives on a farm looks to adopt a son to help keep the farm going but rather gets sent a young girl. We get to learn what an imaginative person Anne is through awesome pictures illustrated by Brenna Thummler.

BRaulerson A standard that could relate to this story is https://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewStandard/Preview/5701.
The UDL Guideline I would use is offers alternatives for visual information. The graphic novel is a great way to put a visual with a story to keep the reader engaged. The ESOL strategy I would use is integrating speaking, listening, reading, and writing. #UCFLAE3414F19

The Ugly Duckling and Other Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen is a great book to introduce traditional literature. It has 8 traditional stories including The Ugly Duckling, The Emperor‘s New Clothes, and The Princess and the Pea. This book would be great to use as a read aloud. A great sequencing lesson plan for The Ugly Duckling can be found here https://www.education.com/lesson-plan/picture-this-the-ugly-duckling/.

BRaulerson The UDL Guideline I would use is clarify syntax and structure. A lot of these stories can even be used as story telling and focused on sequencing. The ESOL strategy I would use is using preview/review activities. I found some great resourcing where we can review the sequence of the story to help with comprehension. #UCFLAE3414F19 4y

Tsunamis is a great non fiction book to use when you‘re conducting a lesson on weather. This book not only gives great facts about Tsunamis in general, but also explains and shows pictures of actual tsunamis that have happened around the world. The standard you could use this for is https://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewStandard/Preview/1609.

BRaulerson The UDL guideline I would used for this book is offer alternatives for visual information. I feel like the students will be more engaged with the topic when they see actual visuals of what a tsunami looks like and the damage it can do. The ESOL strategy I would use is using direct instruction. Modeling and explaining the tsunami using visuals will help the student to comprehend better. #UCFLAE3414F19 4y

Brothers at Bat by Audrey Vernick is a great picture book that tells the true story of an amazing all-brother baseball team. This story would be great for an IR who loves to read about sports! The authors website, http://www.audreyvernick.com/brothers-at-bat/, is a great resource to download a discussion guide for this story. The ESOL Strategy that would be appropriate for this story is Teach think, pair, and share in cooperative groups.

BRaulerson For an ESOL student I would pair them up with someone to help read and understand the story together. We could use the UDL guideline of activation or supplying background knowledge for what they already know about the sport. #UCFLAE3414F19 4y
DrSpalding I own this book and have visited the baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown New York! The story is phenomenal. Excellent choice and it will truly assist most students with text to world or text to self connections. 4y

White Snow Bright Snow by Alvin Tresselt is a great RF that could be used as a RA to introduce winter. This story gives great detail to the weather and how it affects the people in the town. The seasons and weather changes are introduced in kindergarten and a great standard to go by is https://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewStandard/Preview/2894

BRaulerson The ESOL Strategy I would use is using Venn diagrams to contrast and compare the weather during seasons. It would be beneficial for any student to see how winter (like the one in the story) would differ from summer. #UCFLAE3414F19 4y
DrSpalding You are right! You could use this as an introduction to a winter unit and then use your Bentley book as well. Great idea to use a Venn diagram which of course is a tool that is beneficial to all students including English learners. 4y

This story takes us on a journey with CJ and his nana as they travel through the city. CJ is very aware of his surrounds and questions why he doesn‘t have some things other people have. Nana is there to remind him to close your eyes and hear the music and see the beauty around you.

Once a Mouse is a story about a man who turns a mouse into bigger and bigger animals to help them. The Color Monster: A Story About Emotions written by Anna Llenas is such a great fictional picture book that would be great for a RA. It expresses a great story about emotions with colorful illustrations the children will be engaged in. https://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewStandard/Preview/5857 This standard links great with the main idea of the story as it is to express thoughts and feelings clearly.

The Day the Crayons Quit is one of my favorite fiction picture books. It is written by Drew Daywalt and Oliver Jeffers.
