Pickpick

Since I read Hush again, I decided to revisit Bird as well. Angela Johnson is my favorite author. Of all her books I've read, Bird is the only one I read only once, and I was about 12. I remembered next to nothing.

It's not my favorite Angela Johnson novel. I'm not sure it was a great idea to have 3 different POVs in such a short novel; it sort of stunts development. Still, it was a poignant, touching book and I'm glad I read it.

When thirteen year old Bird‘s stepdad leaves, she follows him to his sister‘s house in Alabama, determined to convince him to come home. She can‘t decide how to approach him, so she hides in a shed and observes the family, hoping she can figure out the secret to their happiness. While she‘s in town, she becomes enmeshed in the lives of three lonely and grieving people.

Such a beautiful, uplifting little book.

Deborah42 I‘ve been reading so many dark books lately. This one was the little ray of sunshine I didn‘t know I needed. 7y
