A Dangerous Mourning
A Dangerous Mourning: A William Monk Novel | Anne Perry
4 posts | 8 read | 1 to read
Inspector William Monk has his hands full when an aristocrat's daugher is stabbed to death in her own bed. He is instructed to proceed without delay, but finds his efforts hamstrung by the lingering traces of amnesia and the craven ineptitutde of his supervisor, who would love to see him fail. With the help of Hester Latterly, formerly a nurse with Florence Nightingale, Monk gropes warily through the silence and shadows, knowing that with each step he comes closer to the appalling truth.... "A richly textured, masterfully plotted, thoroughly enjoyable story." THE KIRKUS REVIEWS From the Paperback edition.

The story itself is a pick. I love Monk and Nurse Hester, and since she‘s now moved into a lead role, I get to count it for #Booked2021. The mystery good with a twist I didn‘t remember. The audiobook however gets a major pan for an error in the recording (see my previous post). So - read it, but read it in print. #COVIDHeroes #NurseMC

Cinfhen Great review and how nice to check off a prompt too❤️sorry about the poor recording 😡 4y

Has anyone else ever had an audiobook where the recording was out of order? I‘m 75% done and it‘s clear that it‘s now skipping around. I don‘t know if it‘s a Hoopla thing or if it‘s a defective recording by Recorded Books. 🥺 Glad this is a reread and a library book. I think I‘d be mad if I paid for it.

Mitch That‘s so annoying! I‘d be tempted to think I‘d dowsed off and lost the plot! 4y
DGRachel @Mitch Right? It‘s bouncing all over the place now, but thankfully (?) the events happening make it very clear that things are out of order. Someone gets fired, then the events that causes the firing happens, then someone comes to help them after they‘re fired, then more of what happened before the firing. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 4y
DGRachel But it‘s obviously not flashback. 4y
Mitch @DGRachel very post modern ! 🧐 4y

If you love reading about wealthy, dysfunctional families this is a great entry point into a huge series. Lies, secrets, and cover-ups meet an unflinchingly competent nurse and suffer-no-fools detective. I enjoyed this one!

robinb Will have to check this series out. Sounds like something I'd like! Thanks! 8y

For my first 2017 read, I decided to start a new series. And because I've been impatiently waiting for Sherlock, a Victorian mystery series seemed appropriate. 🕵️🌂🇬🇧
